Selecting From … Nothing
Planet DB2 Blog

Every database platform has a way to select from nothing. Sometimes we use it to generate data manually, sometimes we use it to get values of various system functions, but it is important to be able to do. Dummy Table Generally a dummy table is a dummy table that has exactly one row, but no data this makes it so we can select static values or understand the values of settings or functions, or even understand how a particular function works when we feed it just static data.… Read the rest The post Selecting From … Nothing appeared first on Planet DB2 ..read more

What I liked about IBM TechXchange

IBM hosted the inaugural TechXchange Conference in Las Vegas last week (September 11 – 15, 2023). Here’s what I liked: The Developer community was the primary focus of TechXchange. This is a significant change from the pre-pandemic IBM technical conferences – Think and World of Watson (sited variously in Las Vegas and San Francisco). Two of the TechXchange keynote presenters pointed out that there were no “suits” at the conference (in reference to both people and apparel). Artificial Intelligence (AI) was (not surprisingly) given a shout-out in almost every keynote, but I thought the most pre ..read more

That’s the essence of Prompt Engineering, a fancy term that essentially means commu ..read more

For the past several years, I’ve tried to post an entry per month to this blog. Sometimes, it will be very near the end of a month, and I haven’t posted anything since the previous month, and I don’t have any good ideas for a new entry. Then, I’ll have an exchange with someone – could be via email, a phone call, a face-to-face discussion, whatever – and BOOM! Right there I’ll find the inspiration for a blog entry. That happened again yesterday – the day before the last day of the month. Whew! Here’s what happened: in an email message, an IT professional recounted to me a situation that had her ..read more
