POTD: The People’s Pistol! – The Walther Volkspistole 9mm

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! As German pistol production lagged in 1944-45, several companies explored cheaper alternatives to the P38, including Walther’s “Volkspistole” (People’s Pistol) prototype. Walther’s design used a unique rotating barrel locking system, highly unusual for handguns at the time. It aimed to simplify manufacturing with stamped steel frames instead of milled, while still utilizing the existing P38 magazine for commonality. In parallel, Mauser experimented with both gas-delayed blowback and simple blowback actions, while Gustloff-Werke submitted a 9mm variant ..read more

A smaller cousin to the very popular gamefish the striped bass (Morone saxatilis), maxing out at about 5lbs with the more common catch being in the 1/2lb to 2lb size range. They are silvery fish with several faint horizontal stripes on the side, with only one tooth patch on the tongue. These fish are one of the first signs of the coming spring on the Coosa River. Once the river water temperature starts to creep up past the 53F mark the white bass start their spring migration from Lake Weiss up into the riv ..read more

POTD: Germany Tried Making Sten Guns – The MP 3008

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Facing critical material shortages in 1945, Germany sought cheaper Sten gun copies as last-ditch submachine guns. The first was the Gerät Potsdam, an exact Sten replica made by Mauser, with around 10,000 produced. In parallel, the further simplified MP 3008 (aka Volks-MP.3008) was developed by Ludwig Vorgrimmler. It dispensed with the Sten’s barrel shroud and side-mounted magazine for a vertical mag well. Other changes included a front sling loop and minor fire control tweaks. Optimistically, over 1 million MP 3008s were ordered, though only aroun ..read more

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! The Model 5 was a bare-bones, single-shot 12 gauge shotgun designed in 1946 by Iliff Richardson, who had used improvised slamfire shotguns while fighting as a guerrilla against Japanese occupation in WWII. Marketed as an affordable $7 “guerilla gun”, it lacked a trigger, sights, extractor, or other typical shotgun features. The basic 5-part model had no handguard, using only a wingnut for a safety. A 17-part “deluxe” version added a foregrip and trigger-like lever that unlocked the barrel for firing. To operate, the smoothbore barrel was removed ..read more
