This is Thursday, May 9, 2024. This is Week 9, Day 4. This is Fartlek Day. Gosta Holmer, a Swedish Olympian who competed against Jim Thorpe, invented this interval program for running on trails and in parks. Mr. Holmer developed it for the Swedish cross-country team in the 1930s, which did poorly in European competitions, and Gosta wanted to motivate them. The Olympic decathlete and pentathlete developed a beautiful approach to training that allows athletes to personalize their training in many ways. This is your workout: Warm up today, 60 minute fartlek, 5 minutes hard, 5 minutes easy, one ti ..read more

Editor’s note: Last February, Noah Lyles told the assembled media that he would win three gold medals in Budapest. I remember looking at his face and noting in my diary that this guy totally believed in himself. I also noted that his coach, Lance Baumann, believed in this.  After the 100m win in Budapest, Coach Baumann told me that the 100 meters was the toughest of the three. I became a total believer after watching Noah win the 200m and anchor the 4x100m, which were seamless (well, except for the cart accidents). Paris will be ferocious, but Noah Lyles feels he has been building for thi ..read more
