Canterbury’s board have vowed to “vigorously defend” themselves against a $4 million civil case from former player Jackson Topine, amid claims he suffered a psychiatric injury while at the NRL club. The Bulldogs board met on Wednesday night, one day after Topine’s legal team submitted a statement of claims to the NSW Supreme Court against the Belmore outfit.  At the heart of the issue remains a session last July when Topine claims he was forced to wrestle up to 35 teammates each in quick succession. In the statement of claims seen by AAP,  Topine’s legal representatives say he was di ..read more

Nikita Tszyu has overcome a nasty mid-fight moment to score a unanimous points win over Danilo Creati and retain his Australian super welterweight title at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion. Tszyu (9-0, 8 KOs) caught Creati (8-2-1, 1 KO), with some powerful left hand shots in the first round in Wednesday’s clash, and the Italian-born challenger had a knockdown scored against him in the second, when his glove brushed the canvas. Watched by his elder brother and former WBO junior middleweight champion Tim, who is reported to be likely to face Vergil Ortiz in August, Nikita went on to earn the win by sco ..read more

Queensland Maroons 2024 State of Origin predicted team: Slater set to make changes after injuries sideline certain selections

The only real selection debate for Billy Slater has been settled by Kalyn Ponga’s untimely foot injury. Newcastle’s captain was probably unlikely to get the nod ahead of Reece Walsh for the Queensland fullback jersey in Origin I but Slater was keeping his options open heading into this year’s series. Ponga is likely to miss most of the season, including the entire Origin series, with his ligament issue and Walsh, who missed the final game last year due to suspension, will reclaim the No.1 jersey from Gold Coast’s AJ Brimson.  The early return of Jai Arrow this Friday from a shoulder injur ..read more

Another year and another ICC World Cup is upon us in a couple of months. After the excitement of the 50-over World Cup last year, this time it’s the World Cup of the crash and bang – the ICC World T20 Sports are what dreams are made of – but it goes without saying that they are not a common occurrence. What a fairytale story it would be if Australia – the reigning WTC champions, the reigning ODI champions, the reigning Under 19s champions, the reigning Women’s 50 over champions and the reigning Women’s T20 World champions – were to add the only trophy missing from the cabinet at the moment. Multi-club ownership model: The good, the bad and the ugly behind football’s newest structural trend

Like every sport out there, some things are in and others fade out. Basketball had shorts below the knees in the 2000s, tennis was inundated with jorts in the 90s and don’t think football isn’t guilty of them either. Just cast your mind to the sleeveless jerseys of Cameroon in 2004 and more recently in the early 2010s which saw the introduction of the snood as half-practical and half-fashion. While these trends have certainly had their time and also fallen off the face of the earth, football has a new player in town, however, this one does not seem to be going away any time soon and if anythin ..read more

George Nepia made his New Zealand debut 100 years ago, but was he really an All Black at just 16 years of age?

If the stories are true, George Nepia, famed All Black fullback, was selected for the All Blacks on their “Invincibles” tour as a sixteen-year-old player. In an interview with Michael Romanos, Nepia revealed he was born in 1908 rather than 1905 or 1904 as some records show. In the interview he stated that he raised his age by three years to ensure he made the All Black trials in 1924, knowing that selectors would not pick a 16-year-old teenager. Nepia also advised that players should be picked at an early age if they have mastered basic rugby skills. More Rugby George Nepia made his New Zeala ..read more

Round 25 was a weekend of football that had plenty of action. There were five games due to the Central Coast Mariners vs Adelaide United game being postponed. Two of the five games were draws and there were three red cards, with two for Macarthur FC, who fought on bravely. Interestingly, the round comprised of a 0-0 draw, with seven out of 13 goals scored in the final game of the weekend in a bottom-of-the-table clash between Perth Glory and Western United. In all three games where a team claimed three points, the winning team had less possession than their opponent. Check out which players ma ..read more

It’s a festival of footy as Anzac Round dawns, with matches to be played across a whopping five days in 2024’s most spread-out ‘weekend’ of action.
