Selbst – Despondency Chord Progressions Review
Angry Metal Guy
by Thus Spoke

In the blurred-boundary world of black metal, Selbst is quite special. Possessing neither the cold grit, folk-leaning whimsicality, or vivacious bombast of European and Northern American variants, the Latin American influence instead lends their sound a lilting, layered musicality. It’s been clear from the project’s beginning that this music is both incredibly personal and a way of exploring the darker and more devastating of shared human experiences. This is more true than ever with third LP Despondency Chord Progressions, of which sole composer and member N1 says, speaking also to the surrea ..read more

Tomorrow’s Rain – Ovdan Review
Angry Metal Guy
by Twelve

Tomorrow’s Rain is an interesting beast. The Israeli six-piece treads between doom and gothic metal, and made a splash with their debut Hollow in part because of the sheer number of guest musicians who participated in the album. Now, four years later, the band returns with their sophomore full-length, Ovdan (“Loss”), an album with a deeply personal backstory. This was recorded after vocalist and founding member Yishai Swartz suffered a heart attack severe enough to warrant open heart surgery. The result is a noticeable shift in sound for Tomorrow’s Rain, but one still grounded in the band’s fo ..read more

My Dying Bride – A Mortal Binding Review
Angry Metal Guy
by Cherd

I’ve been listening to My Dying Bride’s entire discography, including this new one, nonstop for a good two weeks straight. It’s begun to affect my daily life. A couple nights ago, after putting the Cherdlet to bed, my wife asked me what I’d like to do with the rest of our evening and without thinking I said, “Drink deep of your neck chalice.” While she was still quietly processing this, I complimented her on the whiteness of her breasts. She decided she wanted to watch “one of her shows” instead and bid me good night. I spent the next hour impulse-shopping online for candelabras and a fainting ..read more

Melvin and The Melvins Rodeö: Melvin Ditches His Pills and Reviews Tarantula Heart

“Melvin’s The Melvins Rodeö” is a time-honored single-instance tradition that won’t be repeated, unless it will. The doctor said — to no effect at all — that Melvin should take his prescription as usual and let one of his many writer personalities showcase the most underground of the underground—seminal co-founders of both grunge and sludge, The Melvins, whose legacy speaks for itself. This collectividual review treatment continues to exist to unite me, myself and Melvin in boot or bolster of the band who reminds us that, for better or worse, the metal underground exists as an important part o ..read more

AMG Goes Ranking – My Dying Bride
Angry Metal Guy
by Cherd

The life of the unpaid, overworked metal reviewer is not an easy one. The reviewing collective at AMG lurches from one new release to the next, errors and n00bs strewn in our wake. But what if, once in a while, the collective paused to take stock and consider the discography of those bands that shaped many a taste? What if multiple aspects of the AMG collective personality shared with the slavering masses their personal rankings of that discography, and what if the rest of the personality used a Google sheet some kind of dark magic to produce an official guide to, and an all-around definitive ..read more

In Vain – Solemn Review
Angry Metal Guy
by El Cuervo

In Vain were clearly one of the most exciting Norwegian bands in the 2010s, boasting 2 great releases across Aenigma and Currents. The latter was even my Album o’ the Year for 2018, resulting in my unreasonable expectations for a sequel. For those unfamiliar, imagine a more varied and melodic version of Borknagar; a convenient comparator in a year that has also featured a new release from those guys too. And good though that record undoubtedly is, Solemn beats it hands down. It references the feel of 90s Scandinavian metal but it’s progressive, forward-looking, and epic. Namely the type of rel ..read more

The Vision Bleak – Weird Tales Review
Angry Metal Guy
by Dr. A.N. Grier

The Vision Bleak is one of those bands that gets me. Or, I get them? Whatever. This German, Goth outfit has been delivering haunting concept albums ranging from Lovecraftian characters to Edgar Allan Poe themes for twenty years. Even going as far as coining their unique brand of music as “horror metal.” Utilizing Type O Negative-esque booming vocals, surprisingly heavy riffs, and bombastic key-driven atmospheres, every The Vision Bleak album is Gothic metal goodness that’ll leave your skin crawling, hands bloody, and eyes leaking. Funny enough, 2016’s The Unknown was the first time any album I ..read more

“AMG’s Unsigned Band Rodeö” is a time-honored tradition to showcase the most underground of the underground—the unsigned and unpromoted. This collective review treatment continues to exist to unite our writers in boot or bolster of the bands who remind us that, for better or worse, the metal underground exists as an important part of the global metal scene. The Rodeö rides on.” Founded in 2018, Veriteras has a very simple mission, to produce melodeath! Hailing from the renowned hot bed of heavy, Seattle, Washington, these Scandinavian-inspired songsmiths offer their sophomore outing with the s ..read more

Exist – Hijacking the Zeitgeist Review
Angry Metal Guy
by Dolphin Whisperer

Following the uniquely progressive death(ish) trend of increasing Hippietude1, Exist has slowly morphed over the years from a spacey, Meshuggah-ish prog act in the vein of Intrinsic-era The Contortionist2 to a Pink Floyd-ian tricky-rhythm rock, primarily, outfit. 2020’s Egoiista, as such, saw coverage in these halls as prizing long-form style over impactful substance—still good though (if a tad underrated). In its dreamy, waltzing soundscape, it also functioned for me as an alluring escape in a year that was, well, quite the weird one. And, as things go in life and major happenings, longtime g ..read more

The Absence – The Absence Review
Angry Metal Guy
by Saunders
6d ago
Florida’s The Absence have carved out a tidy career of dependable material across two separate career arcs since forming way back in 2002. Their first few albums were thrashy, slightly blackened melodeath bangers with killer riffs, striking melodies and catchy hooks in tow. Hardly groundbreaking stuff but solidly entertaining, nonetheless. Following an eight-year recording hiatus, The Absence kicked back into gear in 2018 and now we arrive at the third album of their recharged second era, and sixth overall, following on from 2021’s reliably solid Coffinized release. On this occasion, the veter ..read more
