Judas Priest – Invincible Shield (2024)
Death Metal Underground
by Brett Stevens

Judas Priest came out of the era that melded Black Sabbath with Led Zeppelin and came up with some of the most creative guitar riffology in history, raising the standards by which any new album will be judged, and Invincible Shield tries to balance their past with multiple career peaks. Perhaps the largest influence on this album is the 1990 release Painkiller which melded Slayer-style proto-death with the melodic heavy metal for which Judas Priest and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) are famous, but it is balanced by contemporary power metal influences as well as classic Judas Pr ..read more

Interview with Yosuke Konishi of Helios Press
Death Metal Underground
by Brett Stevens
6d ago
The news filtered down through the grapevine the other day that Yosuke Konishi of Nuclear War Now! Productions had entered into a new venture named Helios Press which will manufacture vinyl records in Brady, Texas. This hopes to serve the rising vinyl market which has not only not fizzled but continues to gain strength: Following a 51.4% year-over-year increase in vinyl album sales in 2021 and a 46.2% year-over-year increase in 2020, sales in 2022 rose just 4.2% over the year. Whether that’s due to slowing demand or supply issues that more pressing plants could help alleviate — it marks a si ..read more

Haserot, Sacrocurse, Trenchant, and Sammath Live in Houston (February 24, 2024)
Death Metal Underground
by Brett Stevens

Some shows define an era, and the assault of Sammath on Texas revealed where underground metal is going now: doubling down on what made it great, injecting new creativity, and fleeing from the dual pitfalls of three-chord nonsense and elaborate “progressive” stylings. The Houston show of this two-date worldwide Texas tour ignited in the Black Magic Social Club, a bar styled after the outsider watering holes of the Montrose in the late 1980s and early 1990s. They charge reasonable rates for drinks, elaborately and morbidly decorated, and are unabashed fans of dark music. A backdrop of skulls m ..read more

Peter Stokkebye – Amsterdam Shag

Pipe tobacco emerges from a weird uneven topography much like death metal. There are niche blending houses, big ones, and a few outliers that make no sense but delight those who resonate to their outlook. Today we look at one of the big blending houses and one of its exceptional products. If you think of every product in our society as the result of people seeking to advance their own careers at jobs by standing out from the rest, the world of tobacco blending starts to make sense. The randomness we see often comes from those attempts. Some however are legacy tobaccos, meaning those that come ..read more

Death Official Merchandise Acknowledges Soft Pink Side of Chuck Schuldiner
Death Metal Underground
by Brett Stevens

As if to acknowledge that Chuck Schuldiner died of AIDS on Valentine’s Day, the official merchandisers for Death have introduced a new line of Death merchandise featuring pink and kittens. Longtime observers note that this is a case of a brand paying too much attention to a niche audience, namely Redditors, who are hipsters and therefore contrarians, and contrarians like doing whatever does not work in order to prove how important and independent of reality they are. After all, “cool” in the antihero sense has always meant a detachment from reality and an impassive staredown of the consequenc ..read more

Varg Vikernes Releases Second Volume of Burzum Saga My Childhood Story
Death Metal Underground
by Brett Stevens
1M ago
As predicted, Mr Vikernes returns with another segment of the saga of his introduction to metal and his unique take on the genre that became one of the pillars of black metal, which increasingly looks like the last interesting thing to come out of music. Where his first volume shows us a teenage Varg encountering metal, figuring out that Euronymous was a Communist and pulling the first black metal Sát Cộng mission, and then getting railed by a justice system that wants to slam him and Anders Breivik into the memory hole, this book promises to focus on the early years that shaped Varg the inte ..read more

Sacrilege – Beyond the Realms of Madness (1985)
Death Metal Underground
by Brett Stevens

Coming from the years of reckless ferment as metal and punk attempted to position themselves to get beyond the rock-revival of the NWOBHM years, Sacrilege incorporate thrash — the real thing, a punk/metal hybrid, not speed metal — into their Motörhead- and Discharge-inspired driving punk rock. As can be immediately heard, this sounds a lot like an early take on the first Bolt Thrower album, In Battle There is No Law, and uses many of the same tropes including the drubbing percussion of Motörhead that Discharge turned into the d-beat style, but also shows similarities in riff pattern. It gets ..read more

Varg Vikernes – To Hell and Back Again: My Black Metal Story (2024)
Death Metal Underground
by Brett Stevens
2M ago
To Hell and Back Again: My Black Metal Story (Norway 1991-1993) by Varg Vikernes 150 pages, Ancestral Cult Productions, $13 This short book serves as a teaser for a longer work, since most Burzum fans want to know the origins of the events described here. To Hell and Back Again speaks most of the signature events of black metal, namely the murder of Euronymous, and interactions between Vikernes and other bands. Vikernes seems to be a natural writer, with good rhythm to his sentences and an innate ability to know how much detail to give in most scenes, avoiding the twin entropy tipping points ..read more
