John “The Count” Montefusco of the San Francisco Giants stands on the dugout steps waiting for a pre-game ceremony before the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at AT&T Park on Sunday, April 8, 2018 in San Francisco, California. (Photo by Brad Mangin) It’s no secret that I grew up a huge San Francisco Giants fan. Even though I was raised in the East Bay surrounded by Oakland A’s fans during their incredible World Series run of championships in 1972, 73, and 74, I clung to my heroes in the orange and black. And it was hard. They were so shitty! But they were my team and I learned to look ..read more

You never know when a paying client will want to license a photograph from you by paying an honest-to-goodness fair price. I came across a rare, fun experience recently when a designer from Penguin Random House reached out to me wanting to use one of my pictures for a book cover. The popular book written by Sports Illustrated baseball writer Tom Verducci about the 2016 World Series Champion Chicago Cubs, The Cubs Way, was being reprinted in paperback. The hardcover sold so well they were coming out with a paperback edition a year later. When this happens publishers usually want a different cov ..read more

The Mill Valley Little League Monarchs have fun before their game against the Phillies at Boyle Park in Mill Valley, California on May 5, 2018. (Photo by Brad Mangin) Saturday afternoon I made my sixth annual drive to one of the prettiest little baseball diamonds I know. Historic Boyle Park in Mill Valley, California. I went to photograph the 4:30 pm game between the KC Monarchs and the Phillies. The Monarchs are managed by my good friend and three-time co-author Brian Murphy, who is in his sixth season piloting his son Declan’s ballclub. They were the Hot Rods in past seasons, and t ..read more

Evan Longoria of the American League bats in the All Star Game at Angel Stadium on June 13, 2010 in Anaheim, California. (Photo by Brad Mangin)   The San Francisco Giants made a big move today to try and improve upon their disastrous 98-loss season in 2017 by acquiring the face of the Tampa Bay Rays, Evan Longoria, to fill a gaping hole at third base. To get the three-time all-star the Giants sent Denard Span, Christian Arroyo, and a pair of minor leaguers to the Rays. To see more details about the trade Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle has all the details in this story ..read more

Three weeks ago I began one of the most challenging and fun assignments I have ever attempted. While shooting the Presidents Cup for the PGA TOUR I had a special job besides doing my normal work for their social media channels. My task was to shoot portraits of as many different people that I could find in and around the tournament at Liberty National in Jersey City, New Jersey. I would be using the new iPhone 8 Plus, with the new Portrait Lighting Mode. But first, I need to backtrack to talk about how such a fun idea was hatched. The week before I was in Atlanta shooting the TOUR Championship ..read more

All of these slides with red dots were published in Sports Illustrated. (Photo by Brad Mangin)   Ever since I was a kid I loved saving stuff. I saved all my baseball cards in rubber band stacks in shoe boxes. I collected stacks and stacks of 7-Eleven Slurpee baseball cups in 1973. Every SanFrancisco Giants yearbook and media guide going back to the early 1960’s? Yup, got them too. I have a Mason jar of every ticket stub from every sporting event I attended as a kid in the 70’s and 80’s with the results written on the back. I saved every credential I have been issued to cover a sporting ev ..read more
