Each week, I hear people telling me they want to build their small business, but they don’t (or can’t) move forward on their dreams because they’re afraid. There are so many things to be afraid of when you’re self-employed: fear of failure, fear of success, fear of rejection, illness, or lawsuits. No money, no time, no skills, no help, no support. Being a small business owner takes a particular type of courage You have to be willing to take action with no guarantees of success. You have to be willing to put all your heart and soul into your enterprise, and you have to be willing to face and ov ..read more

Don’t Wait to Become an Expert in Your Field
Passion for Business - The Self Employment Blog

There are really only three ways to get known as an expert in your field: teaching, speaking, writing. Let’s do it! Do not wait for someone’s approval or permission. Don’t wait until you know more — there’s always an audience who knows less about a topic than you do who need to work with you today. Don’t wait until you lose weight, or find the perfect clothing, or get Botox. Decide once and for all that other’s judgment of your physical features is their problem, not yours. Don’t wait until you’ve crafted the “perfect” speech or the “perfect” lesson plan. Do the best you can, and tweak after ..read more

A Little At a Time, That’s How Big Things Happen

Many small business owners feel overwhelmed with what they have to do and the time constraints they have for accomplishing both big goals and everyday tasks. I heard an interview with Zack Hample (who wrote a book about baseball). Zack has a 203-pound rubber band ball in his home. The interviewer asked Zack if he was obsessive about building this rubber band ball. Zack replied, “I started working on that thing when I was four. So we’re talking about decades here, and it’s not like I work on it every day. Sometimes I’ll add a pound a day for a week, then I won’t touch it for a year. So, you kno ..read more

Eeek! Shiny Object Syndrome!
Passion for Business - The Self Employment Blog

It seems to be a trend that’s growing: small business owners are getting distracted by too many ideas or the latest fad, going off in a million directions and never completing anything. This loss of focus is costing people hundreds of hours a year in lost productivity, lost hours, and lost dollars. It even has a name: SOS – Shiny Object Syndrome. It’s not quite ADHD. It’s more that a new idea captures your imagination and attention in such a way that you get distracted from the bigger picture and go off in a tangent, instead of remaining focused on the goal. We think of a new idea, we hear of ..read more

Just Three Tasks a Day
Passion for Business - The Self Employment Blog

A colleague of mine in one of my mastermind groups shared a great tip with us a few months ago: instead of writing a huge to-do list every day (and never completing all the tasks), focus on just three tasks a day. I’ve been trying this technique now for about 2 months, and I’m happy to report it is a winner! Truthfully, I don’t know “how” it works; I just know that it does. Each day I choose three tasks that I will complete. If I finish them, I can always do a fourth task. For some reason, having only three tasks a day feels so much more empowering that I’m able to do them easily, without stre ..read more

Let’s Talk About Fear

I talk to many small business owners who are feeling afraid right now. They’re afraid of: Not having enough: enough money, enough love, enough health, enough security, and enough freedom. Failure — or being a success. Missing out on all the life has to offer. Not reaching their potential. Rejection. Dying – and afraid of living, too. No matter how confident you are, everyone experiences fear You may know consciously that you’re experiencing fear. Your actions might be showing you that subconsciously fear is the culprit: procrastination, feeling stuck, overwhelmed or out of control. Perhaps y ..read more

What Does “Business Redesign” Really Mean?
Passion for Business - The Self Employment Blog

The phrase “business redesign” might have you quaking in your boots. After all, who wants to start all over again from scratch? Ah. I think I can help by offering up a different definition for you to ponder. Business redesign isn’t about tossing it all away and starting from scratch (unless you really, really want to do that). Instead, I think of business reinvention as a process of rethinking your current business model and your own goals, and finding places that could use a redesign. Knowing why you’re reinventing your business is the first step in the process of transformation. There a ..read more

Lurker Alert: The Art of Audience, Student and Mastermind Group Engagement

Who are those people who attend your mastermind group, Q+A session, or class but never talk? Why do people on Facebook and LinkedIn never respond? And how do you get them talking? Back in the mid-90s when I first went online via CompuServe (remember those days??), we noticed that for every 10 people looking at the message forum, one person was interacting and the other 9 were simply reading the message threads, but never interacting. We called them “lurkers” –  people who didn’t participate actively in discussions, and this 10:1 lurker ratio was commonplace back then. Fast forward 25 year ..read more
