Hugh's Aquarium Views Video Number 93 What do you do when you want all the birds of Lorikeet Forest to come indoors out of the rain? You give the “Recall” signal. Aviculturist Heather recently trained a recall behavior to all the lorikeets of the Aquarium’s Lorikeet forest. A recall is a trained behavior where an animal or group of animals returns to a home base when signaled. The behavior is especially useful during stormy weather to get all the birds into the safety of the indoors. It’s pretty awesome to watch dozens of birds fly into ..read more

Hugh's Aquarium Views Video Number 92 Just like aquarium guests, the penguins of the Aquarium of the Pacific enjoy taking a guided tour of the exhibits. Recently, Admiral Fancy Pants the penguin was taken on a tour of the second-floor portion of the Pacific Vision wing and the Tropical Pacific gallery as part of an enrichment session with his caretaker, Aviculturist Sara. The penguin really seemed to enjoy watching the interactive bubbles of Pacific Vision and taking in the underwater tunnel of the Tropical Pacific Gallery. Check out the ..read more

Fun With A Purpose

Hugh's Aquarium Views Video Number 91 They may just look like fun antics but the behaviors that the mammalogists at the Aquarium of the Pacific train the otters to do all serve a purpose, even the cute ones. They allow the staff to build up a relationship of trust that allows them to very thoroughly check over the otter’s health and well-being. In the video, you can see Mammalogist Erin checking out the fur and paws of Chloe the otter. And a little fun video editing makes it seem that Betty the sea otter is practicing a few martial arts a ..read more

Humpbacks & Dolphins

Along with the usual suspects at this time of year we had a very curious gray whale exploring the Los Angeles Port. According to our staff and Harbor Breeze’s crews a younger gray whale made its way up the L.A. port side all the way past the U.S.S. Iowa before it decided to turn around and make its way back out. Even a quick breach from the gray whale to excite our guests before they went out to the open ocean. Sometimes the younger whales haven’t fully memorized the migration route or it could even be the first time this whale has made the trek without its mom, so s ..read more

Hugh Aquarium Views Video Number 90 Lorikeets love the Halloween season. Why? Because it’s the time of year when they get to change into piranha-keets and devour Jack-o-Lanterns. As enrichment during the annual Scarium of the Pacific weekend, the staff placed carved pumpkins around Lorikeet Forest for the resident birds to enjoy. This year the aquarium’s lorikeets were especially playful as normally they would take 2-3 hours to fully destroy a pumpkin. This year they did it in just over an hour. Check out the timelapse video to see the lo ..read more

Welcome back everyone! Even though we are in the transition period between major migration species we’ve had a lot of success on the whale watches. Not only has there been a lot of dolphins but we have had some humpbacks feeding in the area, and a visit by an early gray whale. And with our new interns out on the boats, we can both record more whale sighting information and share so many lovely photos they have taken over the past few weeks. It’s not uncommon to see a few early gray whales in either September or October, but our season for them doesn’t usually pick u ..read more

Hugh's Aquarium Views Video Number 89 In the lead up to the Long Beach Marathon, the Aquarium of the Pacific sponsors a fun run that takes the runners through the Aquarium. Wally the Magellanic Penguin put on his Ambassador Animal hat and came down to cheer on the runners as they made the turn to the Pinniped Tunnel. Needless to say, there were a few runners that slowed their pace or stopped completely to get a look at or take a quick selfie with the friendly penguin. Wally accommodated all. Aviculturalist Sara brought Wally down from the ..read more

Hugh's Aquarium Views Video Number 88 I’ve been asked by several guests recently about what is the simplest way to tell if you are looking at a sea lion like Harpo and not seal like Kaya. This week’s video is on the three easiest to see characteristics of a sea lion. The most noticeable characteristic of a sea lion is their long front flippers. Since sea lions are basically front-wheel drive, they use these long wing-like limbs to propel themselves through the water. The second characteristic to help distinguish between a seal and a sea ..read more

Hugh's Aquarium Views Video Number 87 The wolf eel’s face reminds me of the evil henchman of a villain bent on destroying the universe. Surprisingly the wolf eel (Anarrhichthys ocellatus) is actually quite docile and quite lovable. One of the neat things about volunteering at the Aquarium of the Pacific is talking with the aquarists about the critters under their care. Aquarist JJ introduced me to the wolf eels in the Northern Pacific Preview exhibit. These fish, yes they are fish, have been at the Aquarium for decades. Hanging out at the ..read more
