Putting country over party and democracy over tyranny | Editorial

As spiteful as ever and wrong as usual, Rep. Marjory Taylor Greene, the Georgia disrupter, complained that the foreign aid she had tried to thwart “does nothing for America.” Quite the contrary, it does a lot. It upholds democracy not only in embattled Ukraine, but also in the halls of Congress. Once again, if belatedly, politics has been stopped at the water’s edge. Aside from the moral imperative, sending arms to assist Ukraine is inexpensive insurance against having to send American troops to defend one or more of our NATO allies from Vladimir Putin’s aggressive ambitions. His current war i ..read more

Hyde10: Why Dolphins took ‘physical freak’ Chop Robinson — and the big concern over his lack of production
Sun Sentinel | Miami-hurricanes
by Dave Hyde
37m ago
You see the size. You see the speed. You see the positional need of the Miami Dolphins in taking edge rusher Chop Robinson with their 21st pick. You don’t see the production. That’s the concern here. Every drafted player comes with reasons why he was taken and a hurdle for working out as planned. Robinson is no different. At 6-3, 254 pounds, he was an NFL Combine wonder with a 4.48 time in the 40 that tied for eighth-fastest among defensive ends. Throw in his shuttle (4.25 seconds), vertical jump (34 feet, 5 inches) and broad jump (10 feet, 8 inches) and you see he has the, “elite athleticism ..read more

SMALL BITES: Lei Day returns to Sweet Aloha Ice Cream in Davie
Sun Sentinel | Miami-hurricanes
by Rod Stafford Hagwood

This is “Small Bites,” a South Florida Sun Sentinel feature with tiny tidbits on the food and beverage scene — because we know that sometimes you just don’t have room for a long article. You want a little news brief instead, an amuse bouche of information, if you will. Enjoy! WHAT: Yes, there are lots of puns and punchlines we could do about Lei Day, but aside from a trip to human resources … again … we would be doing a disservice to the event being thrown by Sweet Aloha Ice Cream to give some love to Hawaiian culture and kick off Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May. Avian flu no longer just about the birds | Fred Grimm
Sun Sentinel | Miami-hurricanes
by Fred Grimm

We don’t give a damn about avian flu in Florida. We abide by MAGA principles of public health. A chorus of epidemiologists who’ve studied mutations in the H5N1 virus are warning that the latest variant of bird flu threatens more than birds. The disease has now afflicted and often killed an alarming array of mammals. Florida’s human mammals seem unbothered. Perhaps they believe their mean-talking governor when he disses medical science as a corrupt subsidiary of the “biomedical security state” and  “basically an arm of Big Pharma.” Ron DeSantis won’t be worrying Floridians about some piddl ..read more

What they’re saying about Dolphins’ first-round draft pick Chop Robinson
Sun Sentinel | Miami-hurricanes
by Keven Lerner
3h ago
Here’s what NFL draft analysts are saying about the Miami Dolphins’ draft after the first round, which saw the team select Penn State edge rusher Chop Robinson with the No. 21 pick Thursday night. NFL.com: “Robinson has the speed and flexibility to be a top-notch designated pass rusher as a rookie and much more in the future. His relative lack of production in college (11.5 sacks in three years) belied his ability to win against tackles and disrupt plays. The Dolphins needed to add more edge rushers, even after signing Shaq Barrett in free agency, as both Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb are ..read more

Ask Amy: A registered sex offender lives nearby and I feel obligated to tell the neighbors
Sun Sentinel | Miami-hurricanes
by Amy Dickinson

Dear Amy: I have a neighbor who was previously convicted of a sexual offense involving a “child.” He served time in jail. I don’t know the exact circumstances, but I do understand that the term “child” may include a person as young as an infant and as old as a teenager. The sexual offender is married with two young children. I know that he and his wife want to keep his history private. However, the other neighbors around where I live are not aware of the situation and their kids play and interact with the sexual offender’s family. Do I need to inform the unknowing neighbors about his status as ..read more

SAMY MAGDY, BASSEM MROUE and DAVID RISING (Associated Press) CAIRO (AP) — Egypt sent a high-level delegation to Israel on Friday with the hope of brokering a cease-fire agreement with Hamas in Gaza, two officials said. At the same time, it warned that a possible Israeli offensive focused on Gaza’s city of Rafah — on the border with Egypt — could have catastrophic consequences for regional stability. Egypt’s top intelligence official, Abbas Kamel, is leading the delegation and plans to discuss with Israel a “new vision” for a prolonged cease-fire in Gaza, an Egyptian official said, speaking on ..read more

by Associated Press

By KELVIN CHAN (AP Business Writer) LONDON (AP) — TikTok is in the crosshairs of authorities in the U.S., where new legislation threatens a nationwide ban unless its China-based parent ByteDance divests. It would be the biggest blow yet to the popular video-sharing app, which has faced various restrictions around the world. TikTok is already banned in a handful of countries and from government-issued devices in a number of others, due to official worries that the app poses privacy and cybersecurity concerns. Those fears are reflected in the U.S. bill, which is the culmination of long-held bipa ..read more
