Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Netflix has discontinued its streaming app for Quest headsets, Upload VR reports. The good news for Quest owners is that Meta recently added support for Netflix in the Quest browser, complete with 1080p streaming. Netflix hadn’t significantly updated its VR app since porting it to the Quest in 2019. It never gained passthrough or download support, and its resolution stayed pinned at 480p. None of that mattered when the app came out for Samsung Gear VR in 2015, but things have changed a lot in the nine years since then. I’d imagine some people will miss ..read more

Image: Netflix The first animated take on Terminator is looking pretty slick in its debut teaser trailer. Netflix just released the first proper look at Terminator Zero, which is helmed by anime powerhouse Production I.G and starts streaming on August 29th. The show follows a resistance fighter sent to the distant past of 1997, where she’s tasked with protecting a scientist who is developing an AI that can compete with Skynet, which would potentially be good news for humanity. It’s hard to get much of a sense of the story from the teaser, but Zero looks very intense, with lots of explosions a ..read more

Netflix says this will be Rogan’s first comedy special in six years, and it will be the podcaster and former Fear Factor host’s third with the streamer; he previously released two taped events in 2016 and 2018. The announcement is notable in particular as Netflix continues to make live events a major part of its service. Previously, that has include ..read more

Sunny. | Image: Apple Just like last year, the hot summer months of 2024 are turning out to be an excellent time for science fiction fans. There are a number of sci-fi series that either just wrapped up, are in the middle of a season, or are set to premiere soon. Perfect for ignoring the heat of the outdoors for the substantially cooler worlds of space and the future. And this is a lineup that could potentially grow even more, as Apple has been teasing the return of both Severance and Silo sometime soon. In the meantime, plan your next few months of streaming time accordingly with this list ..read more

Image: Netflix Netflix is launching Minesweeper as part of its selection of subscriber-only games, and it’s available now on Android and iOS. The classic puzzle game that most people know from Microsoft Minesweeper, available in Windows 11 and versions dating back to 1990, has a fresh coat of paint with colorful graphics and new modes. Netflix’s take on Minesweeper looks a whole lot like, well, Minesweeper, but it adds a Journey Mode that takes players to different levels across world stages as well as unique daily challenges. While searching out and flagging sea mines on a grid is a logic pu ..read more

Photo illustration by The Verge / Photo: Netflix The co-CEO who replaced co-founder Reed Hastings details the company’s new culture memo, its ad ambitions, and what’s next for Netflix. Today, I’m talking with Greg Peters, the co-CEO of Netflix. I caught up with Greg while he was at the Cannes Lions festival in France, which is basically the world’s biggest gathering of advertisers and marketers. It’s an increasingly important place for Greg to be, as Netflix’s new ad tier has nearly doubled in six months to more than 40 million subscribers and feels increasingly pivotal to the future of the co ..read more

Astro Bot. | Image: Sony Interactive Entertainment An adorable platformer, mythological tower defense, RPG / puzzle hybrid, and open-world Star Wars. With Summer Game Fest over, it’s time to take a look back at some of the stand-out hits of the show. I don’t mean the most exciting reveals, but the best games I actually got to play. The SGF space was full of interesting games, some from high-profile studios and others from indie outfits. And there were some games that were surprisingly fun that I only discovered by just picking up a controller and playing. Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess Tho ..read more
