If you have met Christy or spent time with her, you know what a delightful person she is. She is inquisitive and loves to learn. She has interesting insights and creative ways of looking at things. The NVMTA Bach Baroque Festival and Competition is an annual event dedicated to celebrating the timeless music of Johann Sebastian Bach alongside other Baroque composers. On Saturday, February 17, 2024, the enchanting melodies filled Lewisville Presbyterian Church in McLean, VA, marking yet another splendid rendition of this event.

Bio
Japanese-born pianist, Ruriko Osawa, is an accomplished performer both as a soloist and chamber musician. Although her degrees focused on solo performance, she has collaborated with many singers and instrumentalists. Her interest in chamber music led to her participation at the Bowdoin Music Festival in Maine and the Idyllwild Chamber Music Festival in California. Virginia Music Teachers gathered in Norfolk, VA for the annual VMTA conference November 2-4, 2023 at Old Dominion University.
Lecture Classes
Randall Faber was the guest clinician. He presented three classes during the conference: “The Neuroscience of Practice,” “The Piano Adventure–Soaring Up”, and “Technique and Artistry”.

NVMTA’s Spotlight teacher of the month is new member, Dr. Christopher Kies! He grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland (and graduated from B.C.C. High School) where he studied piano with Ylda Novik, an active member of MTNA. Chris said, “Without her guidance, I might not have been able to have a career in music.” Dr. Kies moved to Virginia in 2020 from New England where he had lived for 50 years. He found the Virginia Music Teachers to be a very active and organized group. He was also impressed by the number of events they host each year.

Melissa Dvorak October 2023
Melissa Dvorak joins the NVMTA Board as the new NVMTA Recording Secretary. She is a harp teacher in Falls Church, VA. Melissa recently completed the MTNA requirements for becoming a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM). She said, “It was a nice milestone to achieve. After many years of teaching it was great to see how all the pieces fit together. The certification process reflects all the things we do to be excellent teachers in our fields.” Her current project is to finish her Suzuki Harp School training.
