The Hunt…and Reward for Rare Guitars Thinking about the rare guitars that I no longer own can sometimes fill me with deep remorse. Cynics will say, “It’s only wood”, but former owners of a Gibson Banner or a Pre-war Martin will tell you otherwise. In my years of collecting vintage guitars, I’ve been distracted by new reissues and Custom Shop models, as well as many offers that I just couldn’t refuse. The early days of electric guitars really starts with the Rickenbacker company who put out the ‘electric frying pan’ designed by Paul Beauchamp which was a crude lap steel guitar with a horseshoe magnet pickup. From there we get Charlie Christian mounting a pickup at the neck of an acoustic guitar which morphed into hollow body guitars with pickups to semi-hollow guitar with pickups. Adirondack Spruce (Picea Rubens) This was the choice wood used on pre-war martins. Because it was logged so heavily the use of it was slowed drastically. Also known as Red spruce this wood offers a wonderful tone. It has lots of headroom to strum the guitar aggressively without distorting. It also has a high Overtone content.
