I’m really into words. I love to read, I like to write, and I get a kick out of checklists. For creativity, my go-to activity is ceramics, making things with my hands. The past few months have been stressful for me, and I needed a mental health boost. Art helps me relax, lets my mind ..read more

Last Saturday, my mom and I signed up for a “Sunset Watercolor Workshop” at the Hawai’i State Public Library, and it was so much fun! Paige Su, artist and owner of Poshiki (@poshiki), gave a demo with the watercolor scene, tips about using watercolors, and lots of encouragement. Every seat at the tables was set up with a supply list, watercolor paintbrush size 8, #2 pencil, Magic Rub eraser, 6”x9” watercolor paper, an extra strip of watercolor paper for testing colors, a cup with water, and palette with five Koi watercolors in yellow, red, blue, brown, and purple. We gathered around a table a ..read more

I’m fascinated by kindness stones. You can create kindness stones with almost any kind of rock, though flat, smooth rocks work best. I write messages that say “You are brave” and “I believe in you” and “Just breathe.” Sometimes I like the colors of the natural stone – the spec ..read more

In celebration of World Mental Health Day, here’s a creative stress relief and self-care practice… One Friday afternoon, I spent my lunch break practicing Neurographic Art with Amanda Martinez, training program manager at Mental Health America of Hawai’i. Created by Pavel Piskarev, the idea of Neurographic Art is to transform your stress and worry into something beautiful. And that day, that week, I needed something to help reduce stress. You don’t need a lot of supplies – just a piece of paper; pens, colored pencils, crayons, markers, and/or watercolors; and masking tape (optional). If you c ..read more

My heart is too full for words this week. With thoughts of Maui, I did two Neurographic art drawings. It was calming and meditative to round out the jagged edges. You are welcome to download and color or doodle printable drawings for Maui and Maui Wildfires. With love, hope, and gratitude for all of us ..read more

Hawaii is coming back to life with art. There are beautiful and eye-catching murals on formerly drab building walls and park restrooms. There is gorgeous artwork decorating formerly practical electrical boxes along the streets. There are historical storyboards celebrating formerly forgotten place names and history. And there are statues and art pieces in public places through the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. There are more public spaces that are calling out for more art and beauty… On utility poles. Imagine walking along the road and passing utility poles decorated with a ..read more
