This collage exists only as an image.
The original was one of many that I destroyed over the past week.
I regret that this one is gone, but cleaning out other works felt great
.
I’ve felt overrun with artwork. Every room in my house has a piece (or several) hanging on a wall. It was too much of me.
I began by pulling everything out of the flat file drawers and beginning a ruthless sort. Anything that I instantly disliked went into a discard pile. Pieces that had bits of potential went into an edit pile. I was left with a small pile of works that I enjoy and those went back into the flat files ..read more

In June of 2021, I started writing this blog on a mostly empty website. I had an About page, the beginnings of an online store, and not much else. I was a middle school ELA teacher creating art during lunch breaks, my free periods, and after school. As I wrote then, “Podcasts, articles, newsletters, and books that I’ve read claim that blogs are a thing of the past because people are overwhelmed by content. Then I read something that says, no, don’t worry, blogging is alive and well. I heard a podcast where one of the hosts had a solution for the scrap problem. She would throw them all into a plastic kid’s wading pool and, when she wanted paper, she’d dive in. Was that wishful thinking (because who has space for a pool in their studio?) or reality?
Paper organization for most artists is a struggle with no solution. We all have our systems and sort by color, type, or size. We store these papers in plastic bags, flat files, archival boxes, rolled into baskets, file folders, and plastic containers. We mostly remember to sort our new papers into these categories, but a stack/b ..read more

Yesterday, I told myself I’d feel better if I got into the studio. I’ve spent most of the past week on the couch, trying to complete bits of work in between coughing fits. The week before that was my son’s April vacation and I honestly don’t remember what I did. I did know it had been a long time since I had a good studio day
A good studio day means a few hours of puzzling how to create something new. There’s a certain concentration level where my mind is completely focused on problem-solving. I select a substrate, adhere the first layer of paper, and dive in. The color palate and the composit ..read more

The #100 Day Project starts each year in February. There is a website, weekly emails, and social media support. You choose an idea you want to explore and post your work every day on Instagram using the #100dayproject hashtag. I completed three of them, and each time my art improved and gained many followers on Instagram. (I wrote blog posts about each of them and you can see them here, here, and here).
When the project started this year, I felt that pull to join, but I knew my schedule was already too packed. Creating the art is one project and writing Instagram captions feels like adding a ..read more
