Rambling Jet-Lagged Thoughts on Parenting

I think about parenting a lot. I think about our own mistakes and the things we did right. It is a mixed bag. Perhaps the most regrets we have as we get older are what we did as parents. Woe to the parent who thinks they nailed it. Owning our mistakes is healthy for ourselves and for our kids, even if they are grown. There are a few things that are easy to forget when it comes to parenting. The first is that our children are not ours, they belong to the Lord. We are stewards, not owners. Too many parents rule instead of raise, dictate instead of shepherd. The Bible is clear, but sometimes we a ..read more

Twenty Hymns that You Should Know and Teach Your Children

August 15, 2019 (revised 6/12/2023)/in articles /by Brian Borgman I love both old and new worship songs. We sing old songs, and we sing a lot of new songs in our worship. We do old and new on purpose. I love the Gettys, and I love Bernard of Clairvaux; I love Isaac Watts, and I love Fernando Ortega. I love Charles Wesley, and I love Sovereign Grace Music. You get the point. But one thing I am convinced of is that a hymnal is one of our best friends for private and family worship. When our kids were little it was a ritual: who would have the privilege of passing out the hymnals ..read more

The Cry of a Dependent Heart: Thoughts on Psalm 25

Psalm 25 always strikes me. It is one of those Psalms that touches a nerve with almost every verse. It is Psalm which is so easy to pray because it is a rich prayer to God. It is the cry of a dependent heart. The first nerve that this Psalm touches for me is the deep awareness David has of his own sin and his utter need for forgiveness. Remember, O LORD, Your compassion and Your lovingkindnesses, For they have been from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; According to Your lovingkindness remember me, For Your goodness’ sake, O LORD. (Psa 25:6-7) David feels the u ..read more

Reading the Bible in 2023

As we come to a new year, we have yet another opportunity by God’s grace, to push the reset button on reading the Bible through in a year. There is nothing magical about reading the Bible through in a year, but there is something healthy about establishing rhythms and habits that become a part of our lives. Paul tells Timothy, “Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness” (1 Tim. 4:7). The discipline of daily Bible reading can be based in legalism, ‘If I don’t read my Bible today, God won’t bless me.’ That is rubbish, dangerous rubbish. But the discipline of daily Bible reading can be bas ..read more

“And having shod your feet with the preparation of the Gospel of peace” (Eph. 6:15).           Almost 25 years ago I was at a pastors’ fraternal in California. I asked a friend of mine if he had any sermon tapes (yes, cassette tapes) I could listen to on my drive home. He gave me a handful of tapes from a sermon series on Eph. 5. I popped the first one in and started driving. I was a husband, a father of young children, and a pastor. I had become well-acquainted with the ins and outs of “biblical domestic piety.” The roles and responsibilities for h ..read more
