More Southgate nonsense + Jorginho’s future

Morning. We’re right in that spot now where it’s quietened down after the Interlull, but things haven’t picked up yet ahead of Sunday’s big game. Mikel Arteta’s press conference takes place tomorrow, and I think more than ever the club will try and keep a lid on any injury/availability issues before this one. The stories right now about Man City players suggest doubts over Akanji, Stones, Walker, a couple of others, but they’ll get back to the training ground and get a served a giant helping of ‘Uncle Pep’s revitalising tonic, with his special blend of 115 ‘erbs and vegetables – sure to put t ..read more

Right, so that’s it, internationals are done until the summer, and now it’s all steam ahead for the Premier League and Champions League. A big thanks this morning to Gareth Southgate who played Declan Rice for 90 minutes in two games that don’t matter, much appreciated. I will say I think Rice is a player who probably relishes the involvement, and maybe he’s a rhythm player who thrives when he plays consistently, but it’s still quite annoying. Especially when Man City players pretend to be injured after a few minutes. I fully expect both John Stones and Kyle Walker to line-up for them on Sund ..read more

Welcome to another episode of the Arsecast – the Arsenal podcast. In this episode I’m joined by Arsenal fan Alfie Steiner, to talk a little bit about the Gunners, but more about food and his incredibly popular ‘Alfie Cooks’ channels on social media. We chat about how posting food pictures to Instagram developed into something else, and he now has nearly 4,000,000 followers for his inventive recipes. We also discuss the fact his food is plant based, how that can lead to more creativity in the kitchen, where he sees his newly-found career going, as well as some Arsenal chat as the title race in ..read more

Welcome to another Arsecast Extra, the Arsenal podcast, with myself and James from @gunnerblog. In this Interlull episode we reflect on the pointlessness of international friendlies in March before chatting about the involvement of some Arsenal players for their countries over the weekend. Then discussion moves onto the title race and what lies ahead for Mikel Arteta and his players, with the fixture schedule and to what extent he will be able to rotate his squad with the stakes so high. We then answer listener questions about forwards, whether we’ll be interested in Viktor Gyokeres, Ben Whit ..read more

Reflections on 20 years …

For those of us looking for even more narrative about this season, above and beyond the title scrap we face against Man City and Liverpool, there’s the fact that this year is the 20th anniversary of the Invincibles. 2004 is the last time Arsenal won the Premier League, and if you’d said that to somebody back then, they’d probably have looked at you funny. Roman Abramovich had arrived at Chelsea the summer before, and immediately made his intentions clear by trying to sign Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira. David Dein’s famous quote at the time: “Roman Abramovich has parked his Russian tank in ..read more

Hello. A very quick Sunday blog for you. As expected, Declan Rice played all the minutes for England as they lost 1-0 to Brazil. I didn’t watch any of it. A brief glimpse at social media this morning suggests general discontent with Gareth Southgate. And the world turns. Hopefully there’s no need for Rice to play the entire game against Belgium on Tuesday, but I think we all know that’s probably what will happen. Speaking of Belgians, I saw literally tens of them in Dublin yesterday ahead of a 0-0 draw with Ireland. Leandro Trossard played a half, Evan Ferguson continues his campaign to lower ..read more

Interlull Saturday: Rice, Ramsdale, Kiwior, Zinchenko

Morning all. It’s a very quiet Interlull Saturday so this is likely to be a very short blog. Games are happening. You’ll all be delighted to know that Martin Odegaard played 86 minutes of Norway’s 2-1 friendly defeat to the Czech Republic. Erling Haaland played 75 minutes, so Norway’s coach owes us 11 minutes just to make things fair. David Raya played 45 minutes for Spain in a 1-0 defeat to Colombia, while on Thursday evening Jakub Kiwior played the full 90 for Poland in a Euro 2024 qualifier. They beat Estonia 5-1 (Karl Hein in goal for them), which means they’ll face Wales in a playoff fin ..read more

Morning, a quick Friday blog for you. This Interlull of all Interlulls, hoping everyone comes back fit is top of everyone’s wish list, so it was interesting to note yesterday’s announcement that Bukayo Saka has returned from England duty to Arsenal due to what’s been described as minor muscular problem. The FA announced: Bukayo Saka has left the #ThreeLions camp and returned to his club for continued rehabilitation on an injury he reported to St. George’s Park with. On the one hand, you’d hope that with stakes so high at the business end of the season, international managers are more inclined ..read more

Good news as Tomiyasu signs a new deal

Morning all. Let’s start with the new deal for Takehiro Tomiyasu, because otherwise we might get dragged into more tedious Ben White England nonsense. When the men decrying our fantastic right-back are the likes of Danny Mills, Harry Redknapp, and their ilk, there’s just not much point trying to provide any counter-argument to the garbage they’ve been spouting. Gareth Southgate can continue to pick Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson and see how that works out for him. #TeamBen Anyway, back to Tomiyasu, and the news reported yesterday that he has signed an extension at the club, that will take ..read more

In recent years, Arsenal have enjoyed a glut of cult hero right-backs. Lee Dixon begat Lauren, begat Bacary Sagna, begat Hector Bellerin, begat Takehiro Tomiyasu (briefly), begat Ben White. The latter has been such a firm fixture at right-back over the last two seasons, it is difficult to picture an Arsenal formation graphic without him. Full-backs are primed for cult hero status since it is such an unheralded position, even in this day and age when the role of the full-back has evolved to the extent that it has. Over the course of the last week, White, whose value is not lost on Arsenal fans ..read more
