Saturday round-up: Partey to go + Smith Rowe/Vieira futures uncertain

Morning all. Sorry for the lateness of today’s blog, but I slept it out. Or slept in. What is the difference there? Is there a distinction? Maybe sleeping in feels more deliberate, and sleeping it out is more accidental? I don’t know. And let me perfectly honest, I don’t care. I think I was mostly just catching up on sleep I didn’t get last weekend. My body has been telling me some things this week. Primary of which is that when you get to a certain age you can’t go out on Thursday night, and Friday night, and Saturday night, and all day Sunday, and also Monday night when you get home, withou ..read more

Maybe find a different keeper : Paqueta’s charge

Morning. Further to yesterday’s story linking us to Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow, Andrew Allen did a cursory check of his injury record. Some hours later, when he had got through it all, he sent it on to me. It’s actually almost impressive in a way, take a look. The sheer range and variety of things he has injured down the years is eye-catching. What was that kids song ‘Heads, shoulders, knees and toes’?! That’s his theme tune. With some other bits thrown in. .‘And wrists and spleen and calves and tonsils and vital organs and …’. I’ve said before I think part of the reason players becom ..read more

Europa League final : Lokonga to leave : Goalkeeper linked

Morning. I enjoyed last night’s Europa League final between Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen, not because it was a brilliant game, but because it was just a game of football I could watch and not care one way or the other about who won. I have done too much caring recently, so it’s a bit of a treat to just let it play out one way or the other. The Italian side won it, in no small part to Ademola Lookman, who banged in a sensational hat-trick. The third goal in particular, wooooof! It is always interesting to see how a player who struggled so much at one club has flourished elsewhere. He scored j ..read more

Personally, I cannot get on board with picking the bones out of Arsenal’s season in terms of individual games, moments and points dropped. Over a 38-game season you’re going to drop points and I think if you’re going to pore over the borderline moments that went against you, you have to also consider the ones that went your way too. Declan Rice’s 96th minute header at Luton, his goal line clearance at Brentford, Raya’s kick being closed down at home to Manchester City and flying into the side netting, Garnacho’s narrow offside at home to Manchester United (Erik Ten Hag doesn’t like to mention ..read more

Manager stuff

Morning all. With Arsenal now a fairly stable club, goings-on elsewhere throughout this summer might well become a staple of the blog. It’s not that I necessarily want to write about … I dunno … Chelsea parting ways with yet another manager, it’s just stuff like that could well be the big story of the day. *Checks news* Well, whaddya know?! Mauricio Pochettino is gone, by ‘mutual consent’. Chelsea changing managers is just one of those things you can bank on. Like the sun rising in the east and setting in the west. Like Maroon5 making a terrible song. Like John Terry being a massive bell-end ..read more

Welcome to another Arsecast Extra, the Arsenal podcast, with myself and James from @gunnerblog. In this episode we reflect on the final day of the season, in which a 2-1 win over Everton wasn’t enough to win us the title because of what happened elsewhere. We chat about how we feel after a long, mostly enjoyable campaign, but without the success everyone had hoped for, as well as contextualising Man City’s fourth successive title and what it means for the Premier League as a competition. We have some listener questions about Emile Smith Rowe, whether or not it’s realistic to think we can rais ..read more

Good morning. I’m back in Dublin after what was an amazing weekend. I got in yesterday afternoon, had  a shower, and went out for some food and a couple of drinks. It was a bit more quiet than London, which was just what the doctor ordered. Although I think the doctor would probably also order me to stick to a diet of water and fruit for a while. Perhaps with a side of multi-vitamins or something. Obviously, on the journey home, I had time to think and reflect on how it all ended up. It being the season, the long march from August to May, and the final day itself. I was hopeful but also ..read more

So this is it. 37 games. 27 wins. 89 goals. 86 points. And it all comes down to the final day. It’s all fairly simple: we need to beat Everton, and we need West Ham to draw with, or beat, Man City at the Etihad. Simple. And yet. Neither thing is quite that. It’s taken for granted that today hinges only on what happens in Manchester, but we have to show the same level of performance and professionalism that we have all season to take all three points. Then, realistically speaking, we need something extraordinary to happen in the other game. One minute my outlook is that it’s completely unlikel ..read more

Some Saturday thoughts …

Good morning from London. Obviously everyone’s focus is on tomorrow and the game against Everton, but I don’t want to write too much about that today. The final day thing is something Mikel Arteta has experienced before. Here he is discussing a game in which he himself was decisive, helping Rangers to pip Celtic to the SPL in 2003: “They were telling us we need one more goal. Now we are okay. We need another goal and in the 94th to 96th minutes, it’s a penalty and we had to score that goal to win the title. “So I looked around, nobody was picking the ball. I went and picked it up. The crowd ..read more
