It’s gardening season and Terreeia and I have been working with MaryAnne White (my favourite landscape designer) to finalize the plan for our greenhouse and vegetable garden area. I’m so excited to see this come together! The foundation for our greenhouse has been installed, I wanted it to be visually close to the tall Poplars in our neighbours yard. The original garden plan  Plus the first few designs were basically varying versions of something that looked like this:   I just couldn’t nail down the design in my head because it just looked like a room because we kept thinking it h ..read more

Why We Love the Black and White Trend
Maria Killam Blog

Last week I wrote this post outlining all the black moments I have in my home. Because many of you have noticed that I, too, decorate with black in this black and white trend. Hey, I don’t dislike black. Here’s the thing. Some of us still need to know when to hit PAUSE on choosing yet another black item. This led me to an epiphany recently. And it’s the best yet, I think, on why this black trend got so wildly popular. Like if there was a popularity contest on which trend in the last three decades was the most prolific one, the black and white trend wins hands down over any other trendy neutral ..read more

Sunday morning I had coffee with my sisters and my Mom in our living room. One of my sisters said someone she follows on Instagram had just tiled their entire bathroom black and painted the rest of the walls–including the ceiling–black to match. She revealed the completed bathroom on her reels along with copy that shouted: “Why should you never paint your bathroom all black?  “Because it looks amazing and you’ll quickly become addicted to it and soon every room will be black.” One of the comments stated “I’ve been on the fence about doing this but I think I know what I’m doing this week ..read more

Who doesn’t love a big bathroom reveal? Today I’m sharing my sister’s serene zen inspired primary bathroom renovation!  Get the sledgehammer and get the party started! My sister Elizabeth and her husband have been working on their primary bathroom renovation for a couple years now. One way to make sure you can’t go back is to take out a wall and that’s what Bill did first. Commercial Buildings: Choosing Colour Over Safe
Maria Killam Blog

Apartment and commercial buildings aren’t inherently limited to neutral tones, and yet there seems to be a prevailing tendency to stick to more trendy black-and-white palettes. Personally, I advocate for embracing more colourful options. Let’s take a closer look. Last week while I was vacationing in Maui, a follower sent me this photo. She told me she was on the design committee to choose the paint colours. And of course everyone else wants to paint the building trendy black and white. Consider the setting Would you say the existing colour scheme is working for the tropical setting?  The ..read more

This week I’m sharing before and afters of another suite I decorated for Wilma’s Transition Society. I’m just delighted and grateful for this opportunity to add joy and beauty to a space for moms and their children.  The second suite I decorated during my marathon styling weekend was a three bedroom suite. It ended up more colourful than the first one because the sofa that was donated was sage green. Last week’s living room had a brown sofa and a pink beige chair. So that’s why that room ended up more neutral, you can see those before and afters here. How to get curtains right Again, n ..read more
