Tips for Personal Wellness

If I can sum up my tips for personal wellness in one word, it would be EXERCISE. If I can have two words, it would be EXERCISE and HYDRATION. Three? EXERCISE, HYDRATION, and SUNSHINE (gotta have that Vitamin D!) Guess what? All of those are free for us in Sunny South Florida. They don't require any skill or training. They don't even require any time. Need more exercise? Park your car further from your work. Need more hydration? Drink 2 liters of water from the tap. Sunshine? Do some work outside on the grass. Grant yourself a few minutes to play or take a walk. Eat your lunch on a bench outsid ..read more

How to Read an "Explanation of Benefits" from your Insurance Company
Ideal Neurology Blog

Because of a few insurance hiccups in the last month (mainly with the insurance Ambetter, which is why we are no longer accepting new patients with them until they can straighten themselves out!), I realized that the average insurance literacy level for laypeople is probably close to nil. And since I'm all about empowering you to be able to make smart decisions, both health-wise and financially, I thought I'd talk about this statement that you're likely to get if you have insurance coverage for your healthcare. When a doctor performs a service on your behalf, and you use an insurance company t ..read more

I recently completed an online course I now recommend readily to all my family and friends: ,,The Yale Science of Well-Being course on Coursera (free!). It's self-paced, with both short videos and suggested readings as well as mini-quizzes to test your comprehension. It talks about, well, the science of well-being. It answers these questions: What is it that we want? What is it that we maybe don't want but should want because it will make us happier than the things we do want? How do we counteract our natural instincts to want the things we should not want? What can we do to really increase ou ..read more

Finding the Right Source for your Health Advice

All right, family and friends of #IdealNeurology let’s talk science and health advice on the internet. A lot of people come to me because of my interest and commitment to #holistic medicine. For those of you who have not heard of this, holistic medicine refers to the treatment of the whole patient rather than just their disease – including their lifestyle, nutrition, sleep, fitness, social system, spiritual beliefs, mental health, AND any and all of their medical conditions. Holistic medicine does not try to “cover up“ symptoms with medications that do not get to the root of the patient's prob ..read more

Touchy Subject... No Shows!
Ideal Neurology Blog

Let’s talk no shows. A touchy subject for patients and doctors alike. For patients, because sometimes you just can’t make your doctor’s appointment, and you don’t want to be penalized for it. For doctors, because your living depend on patients coming to their appointments. I’ve heard a lot of talk about “greedy, money-hungry doctors.” Doctors who only care about the bottom line. Doctors whose patients can be on their death bed, and the doctor still will send them a bill! I feel offended when I hear these comparisons. Doctors, in general, are some of the most selfless individuals. In regard to ..read more

Ideal Neurology Blog
by Dr. Renata Chalfin

If you're reading this, you probably think most people have headaches, right? Why should you go see a neurologist if it's just a fact of life? Stress, red wine, weather changes, they all are known to cause headaches, am I right? Actually, it may surprise you to learn that some people have never had a headache in their life! Or if they do, they don't need to lie down in a dark and quiet room for hours before it goes away. So at what point do headaches become a medical problem? In this post, Boca Raton Neurologist Dr. Renata Chalfin discusses the symptoms and warning signs that you may need some ..read more
