The Christchurch Junior Cricket Association would like to, with deep sadness, acknowledge the passing of Derek Cockburn who passed away on Monday the 6th of May 2024 at the age of 87. Derek was our current Patron and a Life Member and joined the Executive of Canterbury Cricket Association JAB in 1969/70. Derek attended every South Island Primary Tournament from 1963 to his last in 2020 in Westport. Over 115 boys from 11 clubs and Schools will be unleashed on the Polo Grounds and Burnside Park this Sunday for the start of the Cricket Express CJCA Summer Festival for 2024. These popular Festivals allows players from all over the city to be placed in even teams for three full days of Cricket.  The Festival is umpired by Youth Boys who have all played in the Festival in past years with twelve Year 9 Boys who completed their Umpire training last year as part of the CJCA Pre-Season Training Programme being in charge of the Year 7 Festival matches. Over 200 boys from around the top of the South Island start festivals tommorrow at Burnside Park, Mandeville and the Swannanoa Domain. For Year 8 boys this will be their last Junior Festival before they head off to Youth Cricket in the New Year. At Burnside teams from Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury, Marlborough, Canterbury Country (2) and Christchurch (3) do battle from 2.30pm with a 20/20 and then two roudns of 20/20 on Tuesday preceding longer format games on Wednesday and Thursday. The CJCA is pleased to announce its confirmed teams for the Canterbury Festivals to be held in Christchurch and Mandeville (North Canterbury) between the 8th and 11th of January. These 7 teams and 71 players will join 13 other teams across the two events which feature a blend of 20/20 and 40 over cricket played mainly on grass wickets – the 12 teams in the Mandeveille based event exceeds that venues capacity so the artificial pitch at the nearby Swannanoa Domain will be the 6th pitch used. Saturday 25th November 7.30am NO BLANKET CANCELLATION – – GO TO GROUNDS ACCESS CONDITIONS AND IF DANGEROUS- DISCUSS AND CANCEL IF NECESSARY – After the rain in the morning and then good clearance with wind yesterday we’ve only appeared to receive .6mm overnight (around 6am) so there is NO BLANKET CANCELLATION OF CJCA CRICKET THIS MORNING. The CJCA has now opened registrations to be involved in Teams for the various Festivals that we are part of in January 2024. Players must register by the 9th of November (DATE EXTENDED) – teams will require Parent Coaches/Managers.
