Illustrated by Rebecca Ashdown For ages 9+ *[Ad-review copy] 'Shoah' is the Hebrew for the word 'catastrophe', and the term used by Jews for the 'Holocaust' (itself the Greek word for 'sacrifice by fire') that took place during World War 2 (1939-1945). I've read a fair amount of children's literature about or featuring the Shoah - both picture books and middle grades. I have never read a story about Muslims saving Jews from the Nazis, and I couldn't wait to find out more. Based on the true events that took place in Paris during WW2, of a community of heroic and compassionate North African-her ..read more

Illustrated by Erika Meza For ages 3+ It’s not that I struggled to find a book to base this week’s KS1 Book Club on, it’s that I had a lot to choose from, and as always I wanted to bring something to the room that resonates with the children in a way that they’d never contemplated before. One of the biggest mantras the heroes of children’s publishing uphold is that every child should be able to see themselves in a book - a book that is accessible to them. I’ve been sitting on this particular book for a couple of weeks now, always planning to review it for you all. However, having observed the ..read more

Illustrated by Stephanie Yue For ages 8+ Reviewed by Ava, aged 11 (in Year 7) About the book Katie has defeated Owl Guy and is finally allowed to start Sidekick training but… it’s harder than it looks. Beth (Katie’s best friend) has wanted to start sidekick training too, so when her mum agrees Katie assumes that it would make everything ten times easier! Little does she know that it turns out that Beth is actually a (way!) better sidekick than Katie and if that’s not painful enough, Beth and another girl Marie are getting on really well! (A little too well…) Added to this, another friend, Jess ..read more

Written by Polly Ho-Yen Published by Knights Of Media For ages 5+ [Ad – PR] * Thank you so much for joining me today for the official blog tour for this superb early reader illustrated chapter book. An empowering story about starting school with dyslexia that celebrates everyone's differences. Illustrated by Rebecca Ashdown Published by Oxford University Press For ages 3+ [Ad – PR] * Here in the UK this week it's Dyslexia Awareness Week. I'm delighted to have a such special guest to my blog today. My daughter was diagnosed formally with dyslexia when she was 8 years old, although every school she went to beforehand had tested her over and over again and it was always 'suspected' or 'borderline' or they'd just tell me she's just too young for us to be completely certain. It wasn't until ..read more

Illustrated by Joe Todd-Stanton (mega talented!!) For ages 5+ About the book I’ve been a fan of the Brownstone’s Mythical Collection series forever - and herewith is the highly-anticipated Book #5!! With gold foil and embossing on the front cover of this extremely gifty and collectable hardback first edition, you know you’re going to be in for a treat. Such care and attention to detail goes into Todd-Stanton’s work whether it’s for his own solo creations or as the illustrator for other children’s authors’ books (e.g. the Wildsmith chapter book series for younger middle grade readers or the chi ..read more
