q: How would morally bankrupt people be effectively punished under a stateless society?
Read part one of this answer here.
a: Before I address this question, I would like to descend into a larger discussion of responsibility and punitive justice. Punitive justice is often taken for granted - you do something bad, you must go through a harsh experience to recognize your actions. But… why?
I’m not going to waste my time consulting various ethical frameworks here. As a whole I think society places far too much emphasis on labeling and segregating beliefs into discrete categories. Let’s start w ..read more

Q: Should anarchists be political or anti-political?
Hakaii’ka: I believe that everyone should be political. I have seen a many of folk say they'll protest against the system by not partaking in it and not voting, however people fail to realize that indoing so you do not get a choice. All politicians are paid off by corporate entities and are going to screw you over but when you vote and are poltically active you at least get to choose who is going to fuck you over. Now this is being politically active in elections which is important but I don't think thats what you were asking. On the questio ..read more

q: are anarchists violent or nonviolent?
note: some people say “violence” and mean “modification of or damage to inanimate objects.” other people say “violence” and mean “physical harm to a human or animal.” people’s philosophical views on sabotage are a whole other question and outside the scope of this piece, which will deal exclusively with whether anarchists support physical harm to living beings (we do not). if you’re interested in anarchist ideas about sabotage, i’d suggest emma goldman’s essay “the psychology of political violence.” or you could read Queer Ultraviolence and have a ga ..read more

GENDER FEELINGS
how can i explain in facts and figures that i just want
to be a woman without any discernible womanhood?
quantify my late-night desire to be a woman
with short hair and radical politics
a queer liberationist sheathed in faded jeans and autonomy?
can you teach me how to teach you
what it is to be a girl who aches to be anything
but a girl?

I saw a post on social media recently that read 'If you think you’re an “anarchist” but have no interest in participating in public health precautions, you’re just a libertarian who’s trying to hide.' (We'll come back to the modern poisoning of the term 'libertarian'.) This thought about public health and anarchism reignited something in my brain that I've wanted to dig into: how do we square a principle of non-coercion with caring for each other's health? I want to focus especially here on mental health, but I think there are tough, generative questions on all sides of imagining true non-h ..read more

Q: If anarchy is a belief system, why is it referred to as political?
A: I could do a serious answer to this, but why would I, when I could do a listicle? So without further ado, here are the top 14 reasons why anarchy is misconstrued as political. Odd-numbered answers here make sense. Even-numbered ones were AI generated. Just to keep things interesting ;)

Because some organizationalist anarchists with a “movement-building” focus, consider anarchy to be leftist—and thus treat anarchist organizing as a Revolutionary Social Movement with structure and concrete demands. (Side ..read more

Q: “DOES ANARCHY STILL HAVE LAWS?” + “i dont understand how innovation happens under anarchy”
When I was approached to write for Debate Me, Bruh, I was honestly taken off-guard— even more so when I was offered to answer a reader question. I’m not exactly a well-read woman, and even less so a coherent theorist, but nonetheless I would hate to dampen the inspiration, work ethic, and motivation of a bright young ..read more

Q: I tend to define 'law' as a rule that's enforced. I don't see much difference between the terms. As such, every group is going to have laws. Would an anarchist society, by definition, have laws?
A: Great question—this is one of my favorite topics! I think it really depends on what you mean by law, but for the standard definition, absolutely not!
First, a little etymology. The word “law” comes from the Proto-Indo-European legh, which is also the source of lay and lie, and in its oldest sense meant a specific order in which things are arranged or presented. It then meant a natural principl ..read more
