I like stuff involving the brain but I am puzzled why this is so competitive. As a comparison, Derm is widely known to be competitive because it basically gives a max return to applicants (not really a secret the money and lack of call are big). In Neurosurgery sure the salaries are high but without the time to actually use the money and the risk of lawsuits (since even a "small" mistake is clearly very dangerous to the CNS) and the 7 year residency makes it so finances are strapped for a... I have posted previously, but wanted to update some of my stats because my feedback from my advisors is that psychiatry is more competitive and I'm not as competitive as I've hoped. URM, demonstrated interest in psych from undergrad. Have an MPH with applied practice in neurodiversity and advocacy. Poster Presentations - 8 (one at a national conference as the presenting author) Research Projects - 6 Research Publication - do not expect to get a publication from research right now. I'm... Say one got Honors in IM and Psych, mostly HP’s (including neuro), and then a few P’s (surgery, OBGYN). Would these clinical grades still be considered competitive for the very top psych programs (e.g. Yale, Stanford, Harvard)? I have a very high step 2 (270+) but realize psych may not care as much about scores as say derm/ortho. I go to a T20 (MD-only). Thanks in advance for any thoughts (Source: Student Doctor Network ..read more

I had only just heard of it. The evidence sounds promising but equivocal (Cerebrolysin & Your Brain | Cognitive Vitality | Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation). Anecdotal accounts sound good. It seems like it should be completely unavailable as it's not approved in the US, and yet when I searched, there are clinics all around me (I recently moved to SoCal so maybe they tend to have this type of thing more) offering injections. They must be doing some wink-and-nod importation of it... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network ..read more

Is it important to be active on various social media sites as an aspiring (neuro)psychologist? I'm considering creating a LinkedIn and I also hear a lot of buzz regarding Twitter for professional use, particularly in academia. Have many of you found it to be useful in contributing to any professional advancement/networking opportunities over the years? I'm imagining that any presence is better than no presence, I'm just curious if anyone has seen any tangible benefits from social media. (Source: Student Doctor Network ..read more

Hi all, I'm considering applying for a fellowship, with the goal of getting into one that's at least 2/3 to 3/4 EEG and the rest EMG. I genuinely enjoy both and my residency allows for substantial exposure to EMG if we want it, but I'd like more exposure to EEG to be able to do both as an attending and also to read EEGs remotely. I would not be doing it with the goal of running an EMU or doing IOM. With this in mind, do companies for remote EEG reading generally have a hard requirement for...
