As you may have seen in the program, the last session of the 2024 Graphic Medicine Conference in Athlone, Ireland will be a Creative Expo. This will be an opportunity for presenters, attendees, artists, and guests to share their work and chat with conference delegates. Call for applicants: Storozynski Residential Writing Fellowship at the University of Notre Dame

This program is open to graphic medicine applicants!   The annual Storozynsky Residential Writing Fellowship will be awarded to an emerging writer in Spring 2025. This $10,000 residential fellowship supports emerging writers who have published no more than one book. Writers with a significant publication record who have not yet published a book are also encouraged to apply. Spotlight Post from Alina Ikram, a high school senior residing in Austin, Texas, USA My mother was diagnosed with lupus when I was born. Due to her sensitivity to the sun, my family spent most of our time indoors. Art became my go-to indoor activity as I could freely express my emotions while coping with my family’s situation. James Burns is a retired graphic designer, animator, and professor who turned to drawing autobiographical comics later in life, starting with “Detached,” about the fear of emergency eye surgery after having a detached retina. Later he drew “Speechless,” about losing his voice after a thyroid cancer biopsy and thyroidectomy. Most recently he drew “The Fall” about a nasty fall that dislocated his shoulder, and later precipitated gallbladder surgery.
