Tapping Out at 7am
Some Other Dad

Subscribe now The other morning started like most others: at 6:45am, I’m awakened to the sound of tiny pounding footsteps across my landing as my three-year-old daughter runs into our bedroom. She comes to my side of the bed, knowing that I’m the one that’ll actually get up and entertain this early morning bullshit. I pull myself to sitting and, holy fuck, the world is spinning. I thought my body had gotten used to the horrible startled jolts out of a sleep state that punctuate days as a parent. Usually I’m just about able to function on a near-human level—but this particular morning hit me ..read more

Redefining Sass in Childhood

Subscribe now I’m sat on the playroom floor with a bunch of hastily-attached hairclips digging into my scalp and some poorly applied nail polish adorning my fingers. I think we’re playing shops, but for some reason I’m also Muffin from Bluey. She’s Bluey, obviously. Yes, I know she’s wearing a Cinderella dress. No, don’t point out the discrepancy. It’s not worth it. I go to give her some change from the till, only to find that all the play money (the few notes and coins that aren’t under the sofa) is gone—it’s all in my daughter’s little handbag. “Pause game,” I say. “Do you want to put som ..read more

Tackling Baby Scale Anxiety
Some Other Dad

“Just pop her on the scales for me,” said the midwife. Or was it the health visitor? We saw so many professionals in the first few weeks with our eldest, that I honestly don’t remember. We both watched the digital numbers flicker and dance as our screaming baby daughter lay on the scales. I’d been there through each breastfeed, day or night, logging the length of each one, making sure we hit the upper end of the recommended eight to twelve feeds a day. I even note which breast she feeds off first. We were min-maxing this shit, but it didn’t matter unless that number on those scales was high ..read more

Subscribe now Once again, a high-pitched yell drags me from my bed as the sun begins to rise. I take my pillow with me, intent on getting some extra sleep top-and-tail on1 my three-year-old daughter’s bed whilst she draws pictures on the iPad that I also grab on the way. I check the time as I go: Saturday, 6:45am. Not a time of the week my pre-parenting self was ever awake for. Her face drops as I enter the room. “I ..read more
