Today, we honor Rita Vegas, who joined Texas Retina in 2002 and currently serves as Supervisor of Eligibility & Benefits in our Dallas Main office. Ocular (uveal) melanoma is a rare but dangerous disease, and only a small number of doctors in the United States treat it. At this year’s ARVO 2024, the annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), Texas Retina’s Dr. Abbey presented 36-month data from the GALE study of pegcetacoplan (brand name Syfovre), the first-ever treatment for geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Under the leadership of principal investigator Timothy Fuller, MD, Texas Retina is now participating in the Phase III AU-011 clinical trial (CoMpass) for treatment of small choroidal (ocular) melanoma. Together with Aura Biosciences, we are investigating the safety and efficacy of belzupacap sarotalocan (AU-011), a light-activated viral nanoparticle, in the treatment of this rare and often deadly cancer. The National Eye Institute has designated May as Healthy Vision Month. It is the perfect time to learn how to protect your eyes and vision, and to encourage your family members to do the same. Here are a few helpful tips: Wear sunglasses (even on cloudy days!). They help protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Look for shades that block out at least 99% of both UVA and UVB radiation. Monitoring Age-related Macular Degeneration at Home

As the leading cause of vision loss in older adults, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common reason patients are referred to Texas Retina. It happens when the central part of the retina, called the macula, is damaged. There are two forms of the disease. Dry AMD is the most common and is characterized by accumulation of yellow deposits called drusen, thinning of the macula, and gradual deterioration of central vision.
