The best time of the year for Division 3 baseball in New England is here. All seven conferences with New England-based teams are stepping towards the conclusion of their seasons with conference championships taking place through the weekend. The first May weekend for New England’s Division 1 college teams included key conference series and even a playoff race reaching its conclusion. Among the highlights, it was a strong weekend for both of the region’s Atlantic 10 representatives to make a charge up the standings, while the Northeast Conference featured a first-place series showdown going in favor of a local club. The names on a roster and the faces in a dugout change or take on different roles with each passing baseball season. That has been true for as long as the game has been played. The latest guest on The Base Path Podcast is a BC senior who has been one of the team’s top starting pitchers over the last two seasons. Shrewsbury, Mass., native John West returned to BC for his final season this spring, and he has arguably been the Eagles' most consistent pitcher in 2024. Breaking news: USM legendary coach Ed Flaherty plans to retire

One of New England's winningest college coaches of all time, University of Southern Maine skipper Ed Flaherty, has announced that he will retire at the end of the 2024 season. Flaherty will conclude his career after 39 seasons and more than 1,100 wins. Flaherty led the Huskies to two D3 national championships, earning the first of his legendary career in 1991. That team was the first collegiate team from the state of Maine to win a national championship.
