To refresh your memory, he played 24 games and carried a .345 AVG, 28 R, 11HR, 19RBI, 1.276 OPS. In the article, which you can read here, we noted that Thames’ plate discipline and pitch selection were a major factor in his turnaround and improvement from years past. The Situation: Runners on 1st and 2nd, 2 outs, 0-2 count on the hitter. The defense is ahead by 1 run in the top of the 8th inning. The 9-hitter is up, and is 0 for 3 already for the day. The Play: The pitcher knows that he can get himself out of a jam right here. He doesn’t want to mess around at all with the 9-hitter because he knows that the top of the order is on deck. The catcher calls for a changeup outside. The catcher taps the ground with his mitt and sets the target just off the plate. The pitcher knows that if he throws the pitch right in the corner of the strike zone, there’s no way ..read more

Unless you are incredibly lucky, it is likely that at some point in your baseball career you will miss some time with an injury. Whether it’s a sore arm, a pulled muscle, or something more serious, it is frustrating to miss time on the field. At any level, injuries are tough for athletes. Because life and the season continue normally for everyone else, injured players often get the feeling that no one cares about what is happening with them. Coaches and teammates turn their attention to whoever is filling in for you and it is easy, in the flow of a season, for coaches to forget to account for ..read more

The Situation: Runner on second, no outs, 8th inning, the offense is down by one run. The Play: The hitter knows that he has to get a bunt down. He has to make sure that the runner advances to third base. As the pitcher comes set, the first baseman starts to crash from the right side. The third baseman stays deep. The pitcher fires a fastball on the outside part of the plate. The hitter lunges across the plate and puts down a bunt to the right side. The first baseman, crashing hard, picks up the bunt and throws it to third. The Outcome: The third baseman catches the throw and tags the run ..read more

Situation: Leadoff hitter at the plate, 8th inning, nobody on and two outs. The offense is down by 1.  Play: The leadoff hitter is a little guy with speed but not a lot of pop. The outfield is playing a little deeper than normal (no-doubles defense) but they are not worried about having a ball powered over their heads. They are more concerned with cutting the ball off in the gap. The hitter hits a soft line drive straight at the center fielder. The ball bounces and rolls right at the outfielder. Since it is right at him, the center fielder charges slowly with his head down to make sure he ..read more

Last time, we explored nearly the same situation. This week, we throw in an added twist. Check out the last TTG here and see if you can figure out why the situation changes.  The Situation:  It’s the top of the 3rd inning and the game is still tied at zero. The offense is threatening and they have runners at 1st and 3rd with one out. There is a 2-0 count on the batter, who is sitting dead red, waiting on his pitch.  The Play:  The pitcher comes set and deals. The runner on first gets a good jump and steals on the pitch, hoping to score on a ball in the gap if the batter get ..read more
