Scott joined Trail Roots in 2019 when he was looking for a run group that was a bit more trail-focused and socially connected (not necessarily in that order). You can find him both on the trail and on the road as he has been consistently training and racing for years. Scott only has one speed, fast. His competitive spirit and hard work ethic often gets him on the podium at Trail Roots races and he pushes and encourages everyone he runs with. Being a dad to two kids, while also having a full time job and a partner who also spends hours on the trail, he often gets his workouts in well before the ..read more

Joel is a Trail Roots OG, starting back in 2012. He even has a famous Austin route that he created called Joel’s Loop! As a long time runner, Joel joined Trail Roots after Erik persuaded him to try it and has been a consistent member since. He’s no stranger to marathons and ultra distances and often marks and leads some of our Saturday group runs. Joel likes the finer things; be it shoes, running clothes (hello Satisfy), and EV trucks, but his calm and approachable demeanor and friendly personality welcomes all who join the group. You won’t find him at the early morning workouts, but he’s a co ..read more

Best Trail for Hill Training Canyonlands / Mt Lakeway Trail The Rundown This trail is 30 minutes outside of Austin, but worth the drive, especially if you’re training for hills. The main route takes you up to the top of Mt Lakeway (about 2.5-3 miles up) with gorgeous views. To add on, keep exploring past the peak for a variety of trail options that lie beyond. This trail is great for a long and technical run and is beautiful in the fall and spring. If you’re a late starter, keep an eye (and ear) out for mountain bikers as trail traffic picks up mid-morning. Address: 187 Trophy Dr, Lakeway ..read more

Emma came to Trail Roots in 2019, six months after moving to Austin. She was looking for friends, a community, and a reason to get out her front door and run up the hills. She has been a consistent member since. Between working as a researcher in biotech, being a wife, and raising a 3 year old boy, she gets up early to run with the 5:30 am group and enjoys long trail runs on Saturdays with friends. Emma has lived abroad and is a world traveler, she even speaks two languages fluently. She’s always up for volunteering and is a big part of the Trail Roots community. She just ran her first maratho ..read more

Trail Shoes Trail shoes are not always necessary, however they are more durable on the trail compared to your road shoes. They also have better traction on the rocks and many have a tougher rubber or rock plate that will give you more protection from the rocks beneath your feet. Trail shoes these days are not as stiff and rigid as they used to be. Typically they will feel pretty similar to your road shoe with a few small, but noticeable differences. With trail shoes, because your stride varies compared to on the road, neutral shoes are going to be the most common and should work for the major ..read more
