DEDHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — Opening statements will begin today in the trial of Karen Read. 43-year-old Read of Mansfield is accused of killing her police officer John O’Keefe back in 2022. She has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors are arguing she killed O’Keefe with her vehicle during a snowstorm outside of a home in Canton. Her defense argues she’s the victim of a police coverup. NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — At least five people were displaced by a garage fire in New Bedford on Sunday. District Chief Shawn Sivil said the Red Cross was called to assist five residents, with a possible sixth person impacted by the fire. Sivil said crews responded to calls of a structure fire on Shawmut Avenue around 6:00 p.m., with units arriving to find the fire stemming from a garage doubling as a nail salon. Equipment to be recovered after pier collapse in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The New Bedford Police Department said that an effort will be made to recover equipment that was lost after a pier partially collapsed on Antonio L. Costa Avenue on April 26. The department said that the collapse of an outer section of the pier at Eastern Fisheries occurred around 3:30 p.m. Police said that four vessels were against the pier at the time of the collapse were moved and that there were no injuries. (WLNE) — The Massachusetts State Police and other law enforcement personnel responded Saturday morning to requests for assistance from Northeastern University Police after the decision was made to require Israel-Palestinian war protesters to leave a campus encampment. (WLNE) — Four Rhode Island men were arrested in connection with a string of 43 break-ins across 25 Massachusetts towns between 2018 and 2024, according to Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan. Jovan Lemon, 29, of Providence, Paul Lemon, 30, of Warwick, Steven Berdugo, 28, of Providence and Paul Miller, 46 of Woonsocket were indicted on April 18 for a total of 95 counts of unarmed burglary and breaking and entering a dwelling in the daytime with intent to commit a felony. SHARON, Mass. (WLNE) — A case of Powassan virus has been confirmed in Sharon. The early symptoms of Powassan include headache, fever, vomiting and generalized weakness. The virus usually progresses to meningoencephalitis, and people with Powassan often need to be hospitalized. A case of Powassan was confirmed in Kent County back in February.  Powassan can be found in the Northeast and the Great Lakes region of the U.S. and eastern Canada.
