WESTMORELAND, Kan. (AP) — One person died Tuesday when a tornado ripped through the small city of Westmoreland in northeastern Kansas, destroying houses, RVs and outbuildings, authorities said.
Pottawatomie County officials said on Facebook that a tornado struck the city of about 700 people Tuesday evening, destroying 22 homes, three RVs and five outbuildings and damaging another 13 homes and one commercial building. First responders were conducting grid searches in Westmoreland to survey damage and to look for people who may have been injured.

TORONTO (AP) — Justin Turner hit two home runs, Danny Jansen added a solo homer and the Toronto Blue Jays held on to beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 on Monday night.
Turner hit a two-run home run in the first inning and had a leadoff homer in the third. The homers were his third and fourth. It was the 16th multihomer game of his career.
Jansen also connected in the third, his second.
The Blue Jays scored more than five runs for the first time in 21 games, ending a streak that dated back to a 9-8 loss at Yankee Stadium on April 6.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Republican legislators narrowly failed again Monday to enact a broad package of tax cuts over Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto, making it likely that lawmakers would end their second annual session in a row without major reductions.
The state Senate voted 26-14 to override Kelly’s veto of a package of income, sales and property tax cuts worth about $1.5 billion over the next three years, but that was one vote short of the necessary two-thirds majority. Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Five Great West Activities Schools made their way to Scott City on Monday for the annual GWAC tennis meet that served as the final tune up for regional competition later this week.
Scott City would dominate the courts, winning the meet by 30 points over runner-up Cimarron. Cimarron and Goodland tied for third. It was the third time the Beavers won the GWAC meet.
Taking singles was Avry Noll, who defeated teammate Houston Frank in the finals. In doubles, Ayden Presson/Sage Stoecklein would win the meet.

Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Garden City police have arrested a teenager, in connection with a bomb threat against Garden City High School in February.
On February 20, Garden City High School received a phone call from an unknown individual indicating there was a bomb inside the school. All students and staff were immediately evacuated, and local law enforcement and first responders responded accordingly and searched the school. Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–A Garden City man died Sunday night after a motorcycle accident near the intersection of 8th and Fair Streets.
Just after 10:30 pm, Officers of the Garden City Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, Garden City Fire Department, and Finney County EMS responded to the intersection for a reported accident involving a vehicle and motorcycle and the motorcycle was on fire. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs signed Travis Kelce to a two-year contract extension Monday that general manager Brett Veach said would make him the league’s highest-paid tight end while keeping him with the Super Bowl champions through the 2027 season.
Kelce signed a four-year, $57.25 million extension with Kansas City in 2020, which followed a $46 million, five-year deal that he signed in 2016. The new extension would keep the 34-year-old Kelce with the club until he is 38 years old.

The Buffaloes endured an agonizing loss to open their Friday doubleheader, almost completing a miraculous comeback. Garden City brought everything they had to game two, highlighting one of their most complete wins of the season.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas will remain among the handful of states that haven’t legalized the medical use of marijuana or expanded their Medicaid programs for at least another year.

Cheney, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City track team made their way to Cheney on Friday for the annual Vernon Ferguson Invitational, as they started off their second half of the season. In a meet that featured several Class 3A, and a few 4A, schools, the Beavers would see their boys take the team title, and the girls were fifth.
Scott City’s boys won the meet with 118 points, while Cheney was second with 100.
