Interview With Breeder/Owner Handler Jackie Kuk I breed Yorkshire Terriers under the Prefix JaLa along with my Mom, Laura Vance. Although Mom no longer exhibits or raises puppies due to her health, she is still a huge part of JaLa Yorkies. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her. I attended Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and finished my clinical training at Michigan State University. I work in a busy, five-doctor small animal practice in Elkhart, Indiana.   1. How were you first introduced to the sport of purebred dogs? To your breed? Jackie Kuk: I grew up with pu ..read more

Yorkies have universal appeal. These spunky, tenacious little terriers capture the hearts of everyone from suburban families to city apartment dwellers, and even burly “tough-guy” sportsmen. But as desirable as they are, they sometimes find themselves in need of rescuing. The often-horrendous situations found in most puppy mills, owners who pass away or cannot afford expensive but necessary medical treatments, and even lost, stolen, or runaway pets can all result in animals that need our help. That’s where Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue (YTNR) comes in.   Yorkshire Terrier Natio ..read more

A Yorkie or a Silky – What’s the Difference?
Showsight » Yorkshire Terrier

We’ve all walked down the street and complimented someone’s small, silver-coated “Silky Terrier,” only to be told, “This is a Yorkshire!” Then, to be politically correct, we call the next one we see a Yorkie, only to be told, “Can’t you tell the difference? This is a Silky!”   So, what IS the difference? First, a bit of history of both breeds. The famous 19th century dog writer Edward C. Ash mentions “bonnie wee Skyes with long silky hair.” The idea here is that in the early 1800s, enterprising Skye breeders produced a miniature and silky-coated version of their 50 to 60 lb. bree ..read more

Heritage of the Yorkshire Terrier Dog Breed   No breed of purebred dog is better or stronger than its heritage. The Yorkshire Terrier’s heritage originated in Great Britain. Most chronicles of the breed’s history explain that the Yorkshire Terrier was bred down in size. Both are facts that recorded history annihilates. The Yorkshire Terrier derives from the small working Terriers of the English and Scotch working people. The Waterside Terrier of Great Britain of the l4th century was a small dog, weighing 6 to 8 pounds, blue and tan in color with a silky coat, 6 to 7 inches long. H ..read more

The correct presentation of the Yorkshire Terrier breed is of utmost importance. Not only the immaculate grooming of dog and handler, but also the ring training and presentation of both are crucial. This article gives some of my thoughts on the subject, which might be helpful to you. Purebred Yorkshire Terrier Presentation – THE DAY BEFORE THE SHOW: At home, we have to take our dog(s) out of oil-shampoo, condition and dry. I always dry from the part down the back first, then the sides and feet, leaving head fall, face, and front of neck until last. Wrap, if it is a dog you usually wrap ..read more
