By David K. Trimble We’ve all seen the footage: in recent days, students and other protesters at Columbia University shouting, “Hamas, we love you! We support your rockets, too!” And, “Red, black, green, and white, we support Hamas’s fight!” And even, “Death to America!”   This is disturbing on many levels. First, because these students are expressing outright support for an officially designated terrorist group, whose stated goal is the eradication of the Jewish people. And second, because these pro-Hamas sentiments are coupled with harassment, threats of violence, and actual violence to ..read more

RFI Senior Media Fellow Katherine Lopez wrote an article in National Review this week on the need to condemn, and take action against, the evil of anti-Semitism, especially in light of the recent explosion of student protests on college campuses in New York City and beyond. Lopez writes: Jew-hating did not start at Columbia with the October 7 attacks and will not end there, needless to say. Nor is it limited to New York. People might previously have thought that antisemitism was a thing of the past, but clearly it’s not. And it’s not merely a political issue. It’s evil. … In the midst of the ..read more

RFI Senior Fellow for Europe Todd Huizinga authored an article recently for the The European Conservative on the concept of “Russkiy Mir” and how it helps explain why “Vladimir Putin and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow, the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, so often seem to echo each other in their statements on Russia’s war against Ukraine…” It also provides a deeper understanding of “Russia’s motives in attacking Ukraine.” Huizinga writes: In Russia, political, military, and religious considerations have become inextricably intertwined. Christianity has been nationalized and, in effect, mo ..read more

By Nathan Berkeley In her superb 2022 book Religious Freedom after the Sexual Revolution, Helen Alvaré writes: Together, the legal and cultural developments of the last several decades have valorized and strengthened the influence of new sexual expression norms unlinking sex, marriage, and parenting…Furthermore, sexual expression rights are front and center in both law and culture and supported by a wide array of often wealthy, visible, and powerful corporate, academic, and political voices…[which] are more and more inclined to portray religious freedom as an oppressive opponent of sexual fre ..read more

RFI’s Paul Marshall wrote an article in Religion Unplugged discussing France’s recent denial of religious accommodations for Muslim soccer players’ fasting requirements during Ramadan, due to the country’s “cramped view of ‘secularism.’ ” Marshall explains how the term “secularism” has evolved over time, and has now dangerously affected the idea of the “secular state” to be understood not just as a political order in which there is no religious discrimination in political or social status, but in which there is no room for religion in public life. He writes: Problems have arisen with more rec ..read more

RFI’s Paul Marshall wrote an article published yesterday in Religion Unplugged on a recent Wisconsin Supreme Court decision that has detrimental implications for religious freedom. Marshall explains: …[I]n a 4-3 decision, the court’s liberal majority found that Catholic Charities must pay the unemployment tax because it was not “operated primarily for religious purposes,” t ..read more
