I am a pony. But not just any pony. I am a pony who is bent on revenge. I am the Iago of ponies, a furry Fury. I am both adorable and devious, and, until I get what I want, I’m going to make every human I meet pay for your collective crimes. I am a tiny, mop-topped demon, and I am coming for you.
Picture a riding stable. If you haven’t been in one, a row of horses hang their heads over their stall doors, gently bobbing to escape the flies, pricking their ears when a human appears who might have a carrot or a peppermint in her pocket.
In the riding arena, a sandy rectangle outlined by a white ..read more

“You have a magic lamp,” Bunny began, taking a pull on her cigarette. She exhaled and squinted through a ribbon of smoke. “And you have one wish. What is it?”
“One wish?” Amanda’s gaze swept across the moon-bathed rooftops in contemplation. She laughed mirthlessly. “Just the one?”
“Not easy, is it? See, most people would say they want to be rich, but you already know what that’s like. Or someone might say they want to be famous, but you already know what that’s like too, don’t you?”
“Not anymore,” Amanda said, turning to face her.
“There,” Bunny pointed her cigarette at Amanda. “That’s it. Mo ..read more

I am eight years old.
The bullies are waiting for me outside the girls’ bathroom.
I race down the school hall as fast as my young legs can carry me, but the bullies are faster. They pounce, pushing me down, and I hit the floor hard, the air slamming out of my lungs.
You’re a killer. A boy yells. Like your mom.
Killer, killer.
I tell myself not to look at them. That gloating stretch of their mouths.
The shadows lengthening over me.
The front door bursts open, and Mimi appears, her eyes spitting black fire. My cousin, only a year older, but her rage fills the hall.
The bullies scatter like fran ..read more

When it finally happens, they’re too nervous to enjoy the upcoming crash. This is what they wanted, the onset of symptoms. It’s like meeting someone new. There’s fear there, folding into every action. They worry and they wonder what might happen. Olivia wakes up around 7 in the morning feeling dehydrated. She rushes into the kitchen, shouting Will’s name until he stirs, roused to notice.
“I think it’s happening!”
Will seems jealous, “Really?”
The thermometer hangs in her mouth.
“Here, your turn,” Olivia says, handing him the thermometer. “99.7F.”
He feels fine but uses it anyway.
Beep, the ve ..read more

I hadn’t planned to go anywhere that night. Tara made mac and cheese on the stove and I watched Octonauts with Mason until she called us in for dinner. It was just the three of us: me, my son, and his grandma. Mason’s dad, Roman, was in the city, and Tara’s fiancé, John, was working late. We finished eating and I washed the dishes while Mason and Tara built Lego spaceships in the living room. I opened a beer and scrolled through my phone.
When I heard Tara say, “Time for bed,” I met them at the bottom of the stairs.
“I’ll do bedtime,” I offered.
“I want Gerty to do bedtime,” said Mason, touch ..read more

When the fine folks of Boston think about organized crime in their fair city, if they think about the subject at all, they think of Whitey Bulger. Or maybe Johnny Depp playing Whitey Bulger. They think of the Patriarca crime family, also called the Boston Mafia, most of whose members are dead or in jail. They think of thugs they’ve seen in movies, guys whose last names end in vowels, wearing tracksuits and stocking caps as they unload boxes from a hijacked truck.
What they don’t think about is Carson Newman and Newman Enterprises.
Carson Newman doesn’t wear tracksuits. He wears suits made by ..read more

I lost him.
I let go of his hand to retie my laces and I lost him.
My foot was loose in my shoe, I wasn’t about to waste time taking it off, and I couldn’t be falling over now. Damn laces. I could have sworn I’d tied a double knot before leaving.
If Benedict were here, he’d have said I wasn’t paying attention, he’d have been clear I wasn’t doing things right, meaning his way. The only way, in his eyes. Oh, sure. He can think that all he likes, but there’ll always be as many ways to do things as there’s people on earth.
Never mind that: How long has it been since I let go of his han ..read more

So, you got locked up? No wonder you look like shit,” said Paul.
“I better fix that,” said Bimbo. “Don’t want folks thinking I’m related to you.”
The crew was back together, and so was the banter.
We were sitting under some red paper lights and an AC vent that had been collecting dust for a decade.
El Paraíso Asia was Bimbo’s favorite restaurant. A Chinese joint that was somehow the best place for Chinese food and also the best place if you were in the mood for Puerto Rican fare like tostones al ajillo. The joint had been in business for generations, and everything they made was great. I was ..read more

Good and bad.
Good. There were many good things in Daniel Kennicott’s life right now. He was entering his seventh year as a homicide detective and had advanced in record time to be one of the top officers on the Toronto homicide squad. After too many years of failed and near-miss relationships, he was living with a woman, Angela Breaker, who seemed to be his perfect match.
Bad. It had been ten years since his older brother, Michael, his only sibling, had been murdered. The case never solved. Twelve years since his parents had been killed in a car crash, and even though the driver had pled gui ..read more
