The curious story of Indo-Chinese cuisine

Chinese food has almost become a religion for us, Bengalis. And after Biryani, chow mien-chilly chicken is what we love the most. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I strongly feel that way. And quite regularly, I come across a typical question- regarding the authenticity of this cuisine. I somehow feel (not being to china till now) that this cuisine, what we enjoy, is not a typical Chinese cuisine- but an Indianized version of the same. And we can call it Indo-Chinese cuisine. And as with any cuisine, this has stories- need to be told. So, without wasting more time, ladies and gentlemen, le ..read more

Champaran meat is the latest craze in the Kolkata food scene. And honestly, why not? Rich mutton gravy with a strong aroma of mustard oil and garlic, it can’t go wrong with us in Kolkata. This blogpost is all about that rustic Mutton dish and my preferred places. And let me be honest. I have not visited all the places in Kolkata serving Champaran meat. So, this blog post will be updated in the future.  View this post on Instagram A post shared by indrajit lahiri (@indrajit_lahiri) As per my madness, every blogpost starts with some backend story and this one here is no exception. Bangladeshi food, however we love it, is not really very popular here in Kolkata. What i mean to say, is original Bangladeshi food- like the one that we tasted during our recent Bangladesh food trail from Foodka. But, luckily, Himur Heshel is a surprise change from the usual Kyd Street fare- no offence intended. And this blogpost is on the same. Check the location here on Google Map About the place When we shot our Foodka episode there at Himur Heshel, it was a small outlet tucked inside a quaint lane. But recently, it has moved to a much bigger space- a 2 storied building, in fact. Parking is ..read more

Even a few years back, we didn’t think that a restaurant will open in Kolkata, specializing on pork dishes. And subsequently, will emerge as a winner. Welcome to Cafe Porkotini- a (supposedly) Cafe serving specialty pork dishes varying from North Eastern delicacies, to pizza to hold your breath… pork biryani. This story is on that.  Location and ambiance If you go towards the Jadavpur PS from Abhishikta E M Bypass, via Jadavpur connector, Cafe  Porkotini will come on your right- bang opposite to Khosla Electronics. Dhakai Parota- or north Kolkata nostalgia

I strongly believe, heritage does not only mean a few bricks and mortar buildings. It’s something, that can be felt, tasted, and lusted for. Now, it’s a quite well-known secret, that my intellect and existence, apart from few other things, revolves around food. And thus, heritage food is definitely among them. So, Dhakai Parota is one of the items from our childhood- for most of us 70’s kids. And there is this small shop at Fariapukur, from where we used to get our dose of Dhakai Parota. This story is on that semi-forgotten food item.  Location If you are from North Kolkata, locating Far ..read more

Kolkata is known to be someplace, where Biryani is treated (almost) as a religion. We have biryani if we’re sad if we’re happy, and even if we get married… Jokes apart. But very few of us know of this dish named Mandi, which can be called as an alternative to Biryani, different in nature, but extremely tasty. So, here’s to Barkaas, the new kid in town, serving Mandi in Kolkata. Location and Ambiance- Barkaas Barkaas is located on Park Street. Well, not the prime area, but the stretch from Mullikbazaar to Park Circus. Let’s say, if someone is going from Muullikbazaar to Park circus and c ..read more

Et Set Mix is the newest edition to the restaurants in Kolkata, presented by the Hanglaatherium brand. Where, in today’s Kolkata, the strive for authenticity has overthrown the strive for good food, this restaurant surprisingly has a tagline “nothing authentic about it”. So, this story is about Et Set Mix by Hanglaatherium. For the brief, they have one cloud kitchen operating by the same name from Kamalgazi (near Garia) and this small dine-in restaurant near Deshapriya Park. The dine-in restaurant was inaugurated on 16th December 2020 by team Foodka. Please check the location here on Google M ..read more
