A few years ago I attended a function launching the Australia Day Nominations for the following year in my hometown. Past recipients of the Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year are invited to attend, and a couple of past or present recipients speak briefly about their experiences or reflections on receiving such an honour.
The function I was present at was the inaugural one and as such one of the speakers was the first person awarded the Citizen of the Year award. Now a retired, and extremely well regarded, pharmacist, he presented a talk on the award, the honour and the re ..read more

Saint Catherine of Genoa
(1447-1510)
Patronage: Brides, Childless Couples, Difficult Marriages, and Widows
St Catherine was a woman of prayer. Her life shows a great example of how one can stray from the will of God and return through repentance and God’s continual forgiveness.
St Catherine was married at the young age of sixteen, out of obedience to her family even though she had longed to be a religious for many years. Throughout her marriage her husband was unfaithful.
St Catherine hid for five years trying to make herself happy. She tried worldly goods to attain happiness yet this ..read more

As a mother of four children under seven organisation is something I desire very strongly. I have, from the very beginning of my motherhood journey, been a ‘prepare the night before’ type. Yes, perhaps my organisation borders on obsessive compulsive but over the last seven years I have learned a few tricks that help aid us in getting out the door on time for every activity.
Plan
A few years ago I started implementing a week planner, which is basically just a whiteboard in our house, with the week’s activities marked on it each Sunday afternoon for the week ahead, and a list underneath of activ ..read more

We all have a favourite Disney princess – admit it. They were the backdrop of our childhood and some films resonated with us more than others. I always loved ‘Sleeping Beauty’ but the Disney princess I found the most in common with was Belle. She was an avid book reader with a huge imagination and then she married a guy with the biggest home library I’ve ever seen, for me it’s a no brainer. I often wonder how I managed to marry a non-reader though, God’s design I suppose…
Anyway, the point I was making was that as little girls we watched these movies until we knew them, and the lyrics t ..read more

I am no expert when it comes to moving house, however here are a few tips I picked up along the way which you may find useful!
1) Start Packing Early
Initially I thought I would ‘save’ all my packing for three days before the big move. However, upon putting some items in a box and sorting through my things, I realised it takes a lot longer than you think. It is important to pack in an organised way as this will make unpacking a lot easier.
(Materials needed: boxes / packing tape / scissors / bubble wrap or newspaper / marker pen).
Once you have completed a box, tape it and la ..read more

Emily Shaw is a member of the Young Catholic Mums team and lives in regional NSW with her husband and their four children.
Where did you grow up?
I moved around a bit as a child, living in a few towns before my parents settled in Wagga Wagga in regional NSW when I was four.
What was your experience of Catholicism growing up?
I was raised in a Catholic family but they saw their religion as more of an obligation than something they really believed in; a truth to be lived. It wasn’t until I left school and started asking questions about my faith and how it related to life that I began to ..read more
