What is the Core? There are many misconceptions as to what the core is and how to get a strong one. The main one is that the core muscles are just your abdominals and that if you do lots of sit-ups you will get one! It’s certainly important to have strong abdominals, but a strong core is much more than just the six pack! The core is a cylinder of muscles that wrap around your trunk and pelvis. It consists of: The Diaphragm – Our breathing muscle that attaches to the ribs and spine The Transverse Abdominis – The deepest abdominal muscle that sits underneath the six pack. It helps to stabilize ..read more

For me it’s a time to relax, have a break from the usual routine and switch off from a busy schedule.  However, it’s also about having some ‘me’ time and I like to come back at the end a holiday feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. I want to feel rested but feel like I have more energy again, so for me it’s about finding the right balance. It’s a real treat for me to have some time for a little self-practice and do more of my other passion as well which is running. We are lucky enough to visit some lovely places and for me there is nothing better than practicing Pilates outdoors in the fres ..read more

As a Pilates Instructor, I have always favoured a more Clinical approach to the Pilates Method which is why I’ve enjoyed doing much of my training with the APPI Health Group (The Australian, Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute). This approach to Pilates teaching has evolved to complement Physiotherapy which helps to aid the recovery and rehabilitation of patients. In 2011 I trained as an advanced Level 4 Pilates instructor specialising in working with clients with Low Back Pain. This has enabled me to receive referrals from health professionals including local Physiotherap ..read more

How does Pilates help to improve your Cycling?
Bridge Pilates Blog

Cycling is becoming more and more popular, but it can leave you stooped forward over the bike and not always in the best position to use the body effectively. The position on the bike also means that the hips, neck, and back are prone to injury. Efficiency is paramount for the cyclist. The more power you can produce and with the minimum amount of effort the faster you can go and for longer. A tired cyclist will start to roll their bodies on the bike becoming less efficient whereas with a stronger and more stable body, head and shoulders, the legs will be able to turn the pedals more smoothly a ..read more

The Importance of Mobility and Pilates
Bridge Pilates Blog

Mobility and Flexibility – The difference? Often people will refer to mobility and flexibility as the same thing but there is a difference. Flexibility is the ability of a muscle to lengthen on its own and is a passive movement. For example, can you touch your toes?! Mobility is more active and about controlling your movement in both the joints and muscles through their full range of motion. If you have good mobility, you should be able to move easily without stiffness. Mobility is an important component of fitness, allowing you to function normally in everyday activities and in ensuring your ..read more

Pilates for Sciatica – How it can help
Bridge Pilates Blog
by Lorraine Hobbs
1y ago
What is Sciatica? Sciatica is pain resulting from the compression or inflammation of the sciatic nerve (the longest one in the body). This nerve runs from the lumbar spine all the way down both legs which means that the pain can often radiate from the low back and glutes, all the way down to the foot. It can be as a result of a structural problem in the low back such as a herniated disc compressing the nerve, but often no specific cause is found. The pain can range from annoying to seriously debilitating and the symptoms include, low back pain, shooting, tingling, or burning pains as well as n ..read more

Neck Pain – How Pilates can help
Bridge Pilates Blog
by Lorraine Hobbs
1y ago
Causes of Neck Pain Neck pain can be acute or chronic and can be caused by several reasons such as activity, lifestyle, age, and trauma. It can also be age related and be down to wear and tear but often due to poor posture.  Poor posture creates an imbalance between muscle groups and this in turn causes problems to the joints and nerves. Pilates will focus on improving the mobility, conditioning, and alignment of both the neck and shoulders together as it’s hard to not make a change to one area without affecting the other. The shoulders and neck are always encouraged to work together in P ..read more
