Millions of costumes are sold every year for World Book Day, which is just one of the ‘dress up’ days that kids have at school nowadays. Many of these mass-produced costumes are made of low quality materials – often plastic based, are made with dubious ethics and many are discarded after being used once. Yesterday I had the honour of being invited to speak on a panel discussing ‘Leicester’s Push Towards Sustainable Textiles’ as part of the British Science Festival at De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester. Clothing patches are a quick and easy way to repair kids clothes, covering holes and stains or even to liven up and old garment. Iron-on versions make it very simple but sewing them on will make them more durable. I take a look at some of the best ones around to save you time. My advice is to choose iron-on patches and then once they are affixed you can sew around the edge to make them really durable. On Monday we hosted a zoom panel discussion about sustainability in kids fashion with special guests Jeroo Doodhmal; founder of Pip and Henry, Tze Ching Yeung; founder of Refashion My Town, Kat Vandal; founder of Vandal Kids and Rachel Kan; founder of the Ecosystem Incubator.
