Red Sox News & Links: Sox Trade for Zack Short, Sign Dominic Smith
Over The Monster

Photo by G Fiume/Getty Images A flurry of depth transactions continues. I have to admit, I didn’t really see this one coming. The Red Sox completed a trade today to bolster their infield depth, picking up Zack Short from the Mets for cash. Short is out of options, so he’ll have to be on the 26-man roster. Essentially, then, it looks like he’s a like-for-like replacement for Pablo Reyes. But he doesn’t hit at all and isn’t known to be a spectacular defender, so this move doesn’t appear to meaningfully change anything. (Chris Cotillo, MassLive) This one, on the other hand, makes a lot more sense ..read more

Photo by Jaiden Tripi/Getty Images With the first “full month” of baseball done and dusted, what have we learned about this Red Sox team? Yeah yeah, I’ll get it over with to not flood the comments with it: Today is May 1st, which means it’s time for a little reflection! The start to the season for the Boston Red Sox has been filled with more twists and turns than The Big Dig. Dramatic wins, frustrating losses—both on the field and on the roster—and more. What are some lessons we can learn about this team so far? Who’s been amazing and who’s been terrible? Let’s discuss! Starting Pitching: Eli ..read more

Photo by Jerry Kime/MLB Photos via Getty Images And is Blaze Jordan, who’s had a ten-game hit streak, ready for his next steps? Happy Wednesday! If you like runs — which, ... why wouldn’t you? you’re baseball fans — Tuesday night’s games were for you. Every game had at least a dozen runs scored between teams. RIP the first leg of Garrett Cooper’s Red Sox tenure (April 30-April 30). In the meantime, a pair of first basemen in the upper minors are suddenly making us go “hmmmmm” with the knowledge that John Henry will not trade for ANOTHER first basemen. Photo by Tim Correira/MediaNews Group/Boston Herald via Getty Images State Troopers! Happy Wednesday. It’s the anniversary of one of the craziest things ever to happen in the history of the Boston Red Sox: Doug Mirabelli’s Police Escort. May 1, 2006 Doug Mirabelli gets a police escort to @fenwaypark to catch Tim Wakefield vs the Yankees after the #RedSox reacquire him from the Padres. His plane landed in Boston at 6:48 pm and he changed in the car. #WBZ camera was there! pic.twitter.com/TPUVCxyxsA — Joe Giza (@JoeGiza) April 16, 2019 The Sox are now 17-13 in third place in the AL East, 1.5 ..read more

How Much Longer Will Rafael Devers and Masataka Yoshida Coexist On The Red Sox?
Over The Monster
by Matthew Gross

Photo by Billie Weiss/Boston Red Sox/Getty Images A short-term issue last week illustrated how there’s also a much more complicated roster problem lurking in the long-term. The Red Sox have a very expensive roster construction problem involving Masataka Yoshida and Rafael Devers. Even on this 2024 squad, which has enormous holes around the infield and in the lineup, it’s already proving mildly problematic. But this is only the beginning. As time passes and the team moves towards its next contention window, the issues are only going to grow larger until a difficult decision is made. Simply put ..read more

Photo by Maddie Malhotra/Boston Red Sox/Getty Images All in a day’s work If you were a part of the majority of Boston sports fans tuned into the Bruins tonight, don’t worry, you didn’t miss a ton. Cooper Criswell turned in a five-inning shutout performance, the offense scored a few early runs, and the bullpen held onto the lead. I could leave it at that, but that’s not the level of effort that gets me the big (read: modest) bucks. What stood out to me tonight was the offensive approach. While Logan Webb doesn’t have overpowering stuff, he’s still a very uncomfortable at-bat for most hitters. H ..read more

Photo by Darren McCollester/Getty Images Sometimes bad and sometimes extra good TK-421 why aren’t you at your post? I mean...Vaughn Grissom why aren’t you in the lineup at second base? As of this writing the move hasn’t been made yet to get him into the Red Sox starting nine. Edit: he has the flu Vaughn Grissom has the flu, delaying his debut. — Ian Browne (@IanMBrowne) April 30, 2024 But Garrett Cooper is up and playing first base! OTM’s Dean Roussel broke him down earlier. Masataka Yoshida is back on the bench. Maybe the injury he sustained Sunday but who can say at this point. Edit: he’s ..read more

Photo by Jaiden Tripi/Getty Images Plus, Theo speaks. We haven’t heard much from Theo Epstein since he assumed an ownership stake in FSG (which, if you paid attention to the comments from Sam Kennedy and Theo himself at the time, isn’t that surprising). But Theo recently made a podcast appearance and said a little more about his role vis-a-vis the Red Sox. In short, he’s a sounding board for “Bres.” (Alex Speier, Boston Globe) If, during his counseling sessions with Craig Breslow, Theo ever suggested “turn Tanner Houck into a Cy Young candidate,” then that was pretty good advice. The Anatomy of An Inning: Pablo Reyes Slams the Door Against the Cubs

Photo by Brian Fluharty/Getty Images Pablo Reyes was DFA’d by the Red Sox. Making this the perfect time to celebrate his. . . pitching. Welcome back to another edition of The Anatomy of An Inning. My name is Jacob Roy, and I pretend to know pitching better than the pitchers themselves. If you’re new here or need a reminder of what this is all about, I take an inning from the previous week or so and break it down, one pitch at a time. Each pitch should have a purpose, I’m looking at each individually to try to go beyond the box score and tell the full story. As we roll into May, team roles are ..read more
