Joe Mazzulla doesn’t know how the Celtics will perform without Kristaps Porzingis.
But it will be at least a week before his starting center is ready to return to the floor.
Before Game 5 tipped off, Mazzulla told reporters Porzingis, who suffered a right soleus strain during Monday’s win in Miami, will be reevaluated next week.
“I’m not sure (how much time he’ll miss),” Boston’s head coach said Wednesday. “We’re just going to give him a week and see where he’s at, see how he responds in the treatment room over the next week.”
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Porzingis is expected to miss “a ..read more

Nick Ahmed’s had the kind of career most players dream of. The East Longmeadow native has played more than a decade in the majors, won two Gold Gloves and is the Arizona Diamondbacks’ all-time leader in games played at shortstop.
But now the 34-year-old finally gets to check one of the biggest remaining items off his baseball bucket list: playing at Fenway Park.
This week Ahmed finally got a chance to take the field at Fenway Park after more than 900 career games over 11 MLB seasons. Having spent his entire career in the NL West, first with the Diamondbacks and now with the San Francisco ..read more

The Red Sox plan to place Masataka Yoshida on the 10-day injured list after jamming his left hand in Sunday’s game, Alex Cora told reporters Wednesday afternoon.
An official announcement is expected prior to first pitch, along with other additional roster moves and updates.
Yoshida was still undergoing his MRI on Wednesday while Cora spoke, but the Red Sox manager said his hand was in rough shape and that the need for an IL stint was clear.
“His hand is huge,” Cora said. “Hopefully we know what’s going on and we’ll take care of him, 10 days and he’ll be back.”
Cora provided numerous other inju ..read more

The Red Sox made a pair of moves to fortify their bench on Wednesday, signing first baseman Dominic Smith to a major league deal while acquiring infielder Zack Short from the New York Mets in exchange for cash considerations.
The Smith signing was first reported by The Boston Globe and was confirmed by a Red Sox source. The club announced the Short trade early Wednesday afternoon.
Smith is a left-handed bat who has seven years of experience in the majors. Last season the 28-year-old batted .254 with 12 home runs and a .692 OPS in 153 games with the Washington Nationals, but this season joined ..read more

As this first round series shifts to Toronto for Game 6 and pressure mounts on the Bruins, it is now the B’s turn to try and answer that age-old playoff question.
How do we solve that goaltender?
Through the first five games, the Maple Leafs were the ones who were trying to figure out Jeremy Swayman, who won his first three starts in this series to stake the B’s to a 3-1 series. But while Swayman was every bit as good as he had been in the three previous, he did not get the W in Game 5.
That went to the Leafs’ Joseph Woll, who got his first start of the series after Ilya Samsonov’s tendency to ..read more

FOXBORO — After finalizing their most anticipated draft in decades, a draft that will define the franchise for years to come, the Patriots waited less than 48 hours to make more history.
They inked defensive tackle Christian Barmore to the second-largest contract ever signed by a Patriot; a fitting dismount to an offseason defined the front office’s ongoing pivot to The Packer Way under ex-Green Bay executive Eliot Wolf.
So are they done now?
Ha.
Several smaller decisions await Wolf in the coming weeks, starting with the open spot on his 90-man roster. But unless the next Malcolm Butler is sch ..read more

If the San Francisco Giants weren’t already regretting letting Andrew Bailey leave his post as pitching coach to take the same job with the Red Sox, they certainly felt his loss in Tuesday’s series opener at Fenway Park, when Cooper Criswell pitched like an ace and Logan Webb looked off from his first pitch.
On Star Wars night – the Sox are out of town on May (the) 4th – ‘The Force’ continued to be strong with Boston’s starting rotation and overall pitching staff, which held the Bay Area visitors to four hits and one walk in a 4-0 shutout.
For the second start in a row, Criswell pitched five s ..read more
