Check out the comments below from participants who attended the recent high school trip to Rome, Italy! Thank you for all your support and prayers. We hope to return in 3 or 4 years! (Fundraising for the next trip begins NOW!) “The entire trip was spectacular and life changing. Seeing places where major events of the faith occurred has allowed me to explore and understand what I believe more deeply. Seeing the major basilicas and all the churches around every corner allowed me to better center my life around Christ. I know that it wasn't in the tour, but going to Asissi with several of the ot ..read more

Christiana Homeschool Academy = Co-op By Rosalie Seeley

Christiana Homeschool Academy is a homeschool co-op that was created by families that wanted another option to educate their children, specifically a classical Christian homeschool education. As a “hybrid homeschooling community,” this can only be done with a lot of dedicated parents and their families. We are intentionally NOT a drop-off school situation. We want you to be involved in the life of the academy! Each family is needed to offer their time and gifts so that we can continue to provide the many wonderful things that Christiana has to offer students and families.  When we take o ..read more

Why go to Rome? By Bill Jenkins For the first time in five years, students and parents from CHA will next week be headed to the Eternal City-Rome.  Last week, Tracey shared what students will be seeing and doing.  This week, I would like to share why. Of course, on one hand, this isn’t a trip you pass up if you have the opportunity. But this did not just come along. This opportunity had to be made. So why? I came across this quotation last week and thought it appropriate for this post. Place people in sight of the pyramids of Egypt, and they will tell you, “Here has passe ..read more

What happened to the Spell-a-thon?

What happened to the Spell-a-Thon? For years over the winter months, CHA students faced long lists of history and science spelling words, attempting to master them and earn the pledges of sponsors in one final fundraiser for the year. In more recent years, these lists have also included musical compositions memorized by ear, landmarks identified by sight, and civics questions from the U.S. citizenship test. But you have probably noticed we haven’t sent out any of these lists yet. Where have they gone? Well, if you are in need of additional spelling work, feel free to ask Mrs. Andrews in the of ..read more

At Christiana, we love books. We treasure the feeling of pages being flipped between our fingers. Great books, good books, text books- we love it all! And hopefully our children are learning to love books too. But they are also growing up in a world that loves to swipe and the feel of a screen underneath their fingertips. As parents, we must help them to navigate it all. There are a lot of articles on the detrimental effects of social media, dangerous websites, and mindless scrolling. This is not one of them, although we will preface with a caution against the overuse of technology. But ..read more

My husband, Thomas, and I, never imagined that we would homeschool our children. However, as we considered all the available options and prayed for guidance, divine intervention via Maureen Dion led us to Christiana Homeschool Academy. The community, curriculum and longevity of CHA made homeschooling seem doable.   In 2011, we enrolled our two oldest children, Haden and Willa. Over the next nine years, they received a solid classical education. Mrs. Garrison, Mrs. Hamilton, Mrs. McQuin, Mrs. Staley, Mrs. Lohrmann, Mrs. Willet and many other amazing tutors filled their hearts and min ..read more

What is “Bite-Size Great Books?”

By Bill Jenkins One of the items that often shows up on the monthly calendar and in my weekly summary/look ahead emails is Bite-Size Great Books. For years, there has been a rumor of this clandestine operation that happens in high school classrooms every CHA morning. Unless you have a child who has braved the tempest and forded the raging river that separates 8th and 9th grade at CHA, Great Books might forever seem a mysterious realm inhabited by people who have been initiated into some secret society, dwelling on a higher plane of being.   Let me pull back the ..read more

Classical Education and Mastery at CHA (Part 3)

By Erika Adam We are going over the time recommended in the Homework Scheduling Chart. What can I do? The first and easiest way to avoid going over the recommended homework time is to make sure that you are proactive at keeping up with assigned work. It’s so important for parents to have the flexibility to excuse assignments where needed- we are all busy homeschool families with many responsibilities. However, if too many assignments are excused, or if assignments are excused without working with the tutor to determine where excusing an assignment might cause a student to miss out on an imp ..read more

By Erika Adam How does mastery-based learning work for my child’s benefit at Christiana? Keeping up with material in mastery-based subjects does many things for your child: Helps them to be able to follow along with instruction in class that assumes prior knowledge, rather than feeling “lost” Prevents students from having to spend a lot of time reviewing past material, making it more likely that they will be able to complete their work within the amount of time listed in the Homework Scheduling Chart Makes it possible for CHA classes to provide a thorough education for all students, rather ..read more
