Big Blockbuster: THE FALL GUY

This is the movie of the summer. It has everything moviegoers could want; comedy, romance, nostalgia and cool car stunts. And it’s the perfect movie to watch at the local drive-in theatre. The ‘star-car’ is a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X painted in chocolate-brown and sand-gold of the original GMC truck used in ‘The Fall Guy‘ TV series. It’s a movie within a movie with Emily Blunt as the director and Ryan Gosling as her stunt man. They’re remaking the crappy 1983 movie ‘Metal Storm‘ which was just a ‘Mad Max‘ ripoff. But that means cool, post-apocalyptic vehicles for characters Space C ..read more

Formula Family: CARLANDO

When F1 drivers Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz were teammates at McLaren, they were like big brother and little brother. Look at the light grin on Carlos’ face when he won in Australia, compared to the huge smile when little brother Lando won in the Miami. That’s why they got the nickname CARLANDO which sorta implies they’re a couple, but that’s BS. They’re brothers. Except if you add a Taylor Swift song. Then it’s obvious these guys love each other. It was really sweet. Plus it’s so rare to see such a close relationship in top-tier motorsports where the competitiveness can get in the way. N ..read more

Ferrari is testing new ‘splash guards’ on their race cars, on behalf of the FIA. The devices are an attempt to prevent excess spray from impacting driver visibility during races. The photos are from a test conducted Ferrari’s private track, Fiorano. Arthur Leclerc, the baby brother of Ferrari F1 pilot Charles Leclerc, experimented with two different spec splash guards, while Ferrari reserve driver Ollie Bearman drove behind to check the levels of visibility. The amount of spray produced by F1 cars has long been an issue for the series, with drivers complaining about a lack of visibility ..read more

There’s No Cure for Car Crazy

The car bug. The love of motorsports and racing. It’s like a virus that gets transmitted from one person to another. There is no cure. For example, there’s Jan Wietzes; a real car guy. After moving to Canada from Holland after WWII he operated a garage on Fleet St in downtown Toronto, later moved it to Mount Pleasant Rd in midtown, then eventually out to the suburbs. The family business expanded from repairs to selling sports cars like the Sunbeam Tiger. His son Eppie Wietzes became a racer, and was one of the first Canadians Formula 1 drivers ever. Wietzes took part in two Formula 1 rac ..read more

PROFESSOR: Men + Loud Exhaust = Sadists and Psychopaths

Just when you start to think that society is becoming more tolerant, you read about people like Julie in the backwoods town of London, Ontario, Canada. You see, Julie was walking her dog near the University campus, and was startled by a sound. She says that dear little Fido was startled too, and even the squirrels ran away; the poor little fur-babies! Was it that ‘rap music’ bumping out a car stereo that scared Julie? No, it was just the exhaust note of a passing car. Problem is that Julie is a professor at the University of Western Ontario, so she created a study called “A Desire For Loud ..read more

With restrictive city by-laws effectively shutting down the La Paloma car meet on Friday nights in Vaughan, its anyone’s guess where the next big event will be. Just north of Vaughan is the town of Newmarket and there was a sanctioned car meet on Friday night; went to check it out. With the Bugeye looking fresh from the body shop and car wash, and the OEM+ car garnered just a little attention parked next to vanilla-coloured Hondas. There were several Subaru afficionados at the show including Owen and his girl Emily, who brought this right-hand-drive Hawkeye WRX to the show. It had an ..read more

JD MOVIE: Running Wild (1955)

The availability of automobiles had a huge impact on North American society in the 1950s. God only knows what teenagers were doing at the local diner or drive-in, away from parents prying eyes. The temptations of booze, drugs, sex and crime, would tear the fabric of society. A reflection of those times were the low-budget, B-movies of the era. Morality tales disguised as car flicks commonly played at drive-in theatres. The genre is sometimes called Hot Rod / Juvenile Delinquent movies and they made being bad look so good! The 1955 film ‘Running Wild’ follows a pattern in many Hot Rod / J ..read more

Race Day 2: Hard Rain’s a Gonna Fall

Back at the track on Sunday morning. Skies bleak and grey, with steady rain falling. Daniel Demaras’ fist pole position in F1200 came at Mosport in the rain last year, and it’s just the kind of driving conditions that he excels in. The team did everything they could to correct the engine issue from Saturday, but until the cars head out on track, there’s no way to be sure the problems are solved. But with the rainy conditions, grip and not power is what drivers need. In the VMS paddock before the race, Demaras was focused on the challenge ahead. He couldn’t control the piston rings or exh ..read more
