FEMA US Homeland Security Citizen and Immigration Services Flyer Closeup
More than 7,000 people participated in FEMA’s 2022 National Household Survey, which measured preparedness for four specific natural hazards (avalanche, extreme heat, landslide, and pandemic) and three human-created hazards (active shooter, chemical emergency, and cyberattack). The results of the survey highlight some key areas of underpreparedness in the American people.
Reluctance to Collaborate
The survey found that people are less likely to work with others—such as their neighbors—to prepare than they are to take other ..read more

The Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) defines extreme heat as a period of high heat and humidity with temperatures exceeding 90 degrees for a minimum of two to three days. FEMA reports that, of all weather-related disasters, extreme heat events lead to the highest number of deaths annually.
Even though we’ve been enjoying a lovely summer in most of the Pacific Northwest, the eastern half of our state and much of the U.S. south is currently experiencing either red flag or excessive heat warnings, excessive heat watches, or heat advisories. Much of Europe and parts of Asia are a ..read more

The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) is saying out loud what we have all been thinking: “We no longer have smoke-free summers in Washington.” That’s how DOH Air Quality Specialist Kaitlyn Kelly put it. What that means is that we have to add Smoke to our list of Washington seasons: Rain, Spring, Junuary, Summer, Spider, Extended Summer, and Fall, with Smoke coinciding with Summer and potentially extending into Fall.
Kelly warned that “We have an outlook for below normal precipitation and that’s going to last into fall, so conditions are trending to a long fire season,” which means “a ..read more

When the federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) declaration expired on May 11, what it signaled, unfortunately, was not the end of COVID. Instead, it represents the end of the federal government’s flexible response to the pandemic, which will result in changes to resource availability and data reporting:
Throughout the pandemic, the federal government purchased and distributed COVID vaccines. It will continue to provide vaccines for the time being. When supplies run out, people will likely need to turn to the private market. In Washington, pediatric COVID-19 vaccinations will con ..read more
