Located in the heart of Houston’s eclectic Montrose neighbourhood, the Garden Bungalows at La Colombe d’Or offer visitors and locals alike an artful respite from the hum of the big city that surrounds. The site is situated across the road from La Colombe d’Or’s newly renovated historic 1920’s Mansion and new residential tower, and is intrinsically connected in both concept and history. Drawing from the aesthetic of bohemian-chic apartments in mid-century Paris, to which artists who frequented the original La Colombe d’Or in the South of France might have returned back to, these serve as a whim ..read more

The founders of Oever Gallery located in Oostende, Belgium, gave 5AM design studio carte blanche for the spatial design. The strong link with graffiti, street, and urban art formed the basis for the interior concept. The challenge consisted in keeping the gallery space for creative experiment, inspiring a new generation of artists on the one hand, but also radiating inviting energy for curious passers-by wandering inside for a coffee or a book. 5AM decided to flip things around and recreated the typical street artist’s canvas, the concrete jungle, in a minimal, stripped-down version inside the ..read more

The DULUX Colour forecast for 2023 is expressed through three exciting pallets that are set to influence interiors in the coming year. I recently sat down with Dulux’s Colour Expert, Andrea Lucena-Orr whom broke down these interesting and diverse forecasts. After a chaotic couple of years, many of us feel an overwhelming desire to live more simply and authentically. There has been a conscious stripping away of the unnecessary and superfluous, both in terms of what we surround ourselves with and how we spend our time, to create space for more meaningful connections. In response, the Dulux Colou ..read more

Fulham Cemetery Lodge

Fulham Cemetery Lodge was built in 1865 as part of an urban composition alongside the cemetery chapel and gatehouse. Over the years the lodge and an adjacent accretion of sheds and public toilets had fallen into disrepair. The original urban composition has been repaired and enhanced, developing an architectural language by Simon Gill Architects, that allows old and new to give meaning to each other. The retained lodge, now dramatically refurbished and extended, juxtaposes a house for the living beside a home for the dead. Materials and features create a dynamic relationship between old and ne ..read more

El Torón Reserve House is located on the coast of Oaxaca, at the southernmost point of the Mexican Pacific coastline. It is a protected 30-hectare area characterised by mixed vegetation and rugged topography, with steep cliffs and hilltops creating hard-to-reach spots and a unique natural beauty. For the House IUA Ignacio Urquiza Arquitectos imagined a lightweight architecture that questions the scale, the physical relationship between the building and its surroundings, and the use of a number of elements such as palm roofs. An architecture where they imagined living only on terraces or on a c ..read more

The Origami House features a new rear extension to a family home in the Buchlyvie Conservation Area of Stirlingshire located in Scotland, United Kingdom. The ground floor plan of the existing cottage was composed of small, dark rooms which closed the house off from the expansive rear garden. The clients asked Loader Monteith to upgrade the home and bring the outside in and to allow for plenty of natural light, a new dining space, study area, shower room and kitchen. Loader Monteith placed the new kitchen at the heart of the plan which unlocked several opportunities within the constrained footp ..read more
