How much do you think about the scents in your home? Candles, plug ins, incense, perfume sticks and liquids are all increasingly popular and can cost from a couple of pounds to hundreds. Having a beautifully fragranced home is a lovely thing, but have you considered what goes into these scents? Whatever these items are made of, you will be breathing them in continuously and so will your family and pets. When Redfin in the US asked us to comment on such things, we jumped at the chance as we feel very strongly about what we choose to add fragrance to our living spaces. Why we created a natural perfume

An appreciation of nature and an uncomfortable feeling about mass produced, commercial beauty products got us thinking. What is really going in to all the mass marketed perfumes and lotions that are sold at high prices but don’t reveal the real ingredient list? How can a huge, global company really care about ingredients when its shareholders and profits that are prioritised. We would find one great company that seemed to have great ethics, run by people who cared, only to find that it had actually been bought by a multinational that perhaps didn’t care as much about the environment or the che ..read more

Natural fragrance is essential if you care about your body and the environment

We set up Jones and Modha because we wanted an alternative to commercial, mass produced perfumes and fragrances. We also wanted to highlight to others that there are other choices when it comes to fragrance, and that we don’t have to buy from companies that potentially use ingredients derived from petrochemicals that are harmful for the planet and our skin. It’s an easy swop - going from the perfume or cologne you’ve always worn, without questioning the ingredients and ethos, to one that uses only natural plant and flower derived ingredients. Have you tried Jones & Modha yet? Or are you co ..read more

As we wrote in an earlier blog, the move towards buying more sustainable gifts is increasing, and we’re so delighted! We set up Jones & Modha to draw attention to the need for us all to think more sustainably when it comes to buying beauty products and fragrance. For too long, perfume has gone under the radar and seems not to be questioned at all in terms of what ingredients are used and the environmental impact, as well as the adverse impact on our skin, of course. We wanted to offer an alternative, sophisticated fragrance for those who love the planet and care about reducing the effects ..read more

Sustainability is important for shoppers At Jones & Modha we're all about promoting sustainability and doing all that we can to reduce our impact on the environment. We were so pleased to see statistics from IBM saying that "more than 2 in 3 global respondents say environmental issues are significantly (very or extremely) important to them personally" when it comes to shopping, investment and travel. With so much choice now for shoppers, and so much greenwashing, it’s not easy to identify brands that are genuinely sustainable and actually deliver in terms of reducing their environmental im ..read more

Food choices and sustainability As natural perfume creators, you might wonder what an article on planet friendly food is doing here! Well, being environmentally conscious, we are interested in everything we can do to reduce climate change and food is a big part of that. Also, Catrin, the Jones bit of Jones and Modha, co-owns a food business (Papadeli) and has always been interested in food and nutritions alongside nature and protecting our planet. It all fits together doesn’t it? And food security and systems are a key part of the jigsaw when it comes to sustainability. As a food lover and a ..read more

Which is the best natural perfume?
Jones & Modha Blog

In our opinion, the answer would be, of course, Jones & Modha! But seriously, the best natural perfume would be one that is made with integrity, no green washing. It is possible to use the word ‘natural’ without being transparent about ingredients or intention. Look around the supermarket shelves next time you visit and count how many food and drink producers use the word ‘natural’. And then check out the ingredients. Their interpretation of natural may not be the same as yours. What does Natural mean? The Oxford Dictionary defines natural as: “existing in or derived from nature; not made ..read more

The benefits of wearing a natural fragrance

What difference does a natural fragrance make? We set out to offer an alternative to mass produced, commercial perfumes. The ones that have been around for a long time. Some are endorsed by celebrities, many are intricately packaged and most keep their ingredients secret. And they’ve become status symbols, iconic some of them, symbols of luxury and success. The advertising campaigns are fantastical and Hollywood-esque, shoot in sumptuous surroundings, far flung locations, places we’d love to visit but may never get to. They are loved as signature scents, becoming part of some people’s identity ..read more

Can you make natural perfume last longer?
Jones & Modha Blog
by Catrin MacDonnell

As natural perfume makers, we get asked this frequently. Are there ways of spritzing on the fragrance and making it last all day, without reapplying? It’s a difficult one as natural perfume, if it lives up to its name and is made with only natural plant and flower oils and resins, doesn’t contain any synthetic chemicals. And the perfumes that do last the longest are, I’m afraid, the ones that contain synthetic ingredients as they are made to last longer. I am not a huge fan of the perfumes that cling on for 24 hours, as they have a slightly ‘cloying’ hit that makes me feel a little queasy. Thi ..read more
