So you know what tattoos are but don't really understand how they exactly work? Have you been thinking about what makes the tattoo remain permanently in and on your skin? Well, I am here to answer all those questions you might have about tattoos and how they work? SO, JUST HOW DO TATTOOS WORK? When it comes to getting inked, it literally means inserting ink into the skin. There are a variety of tools that have been used to tattoo people over the years, but generally these are a needle of some sort - holding ink that then punctures the skin. Unlike the type of needle used to draw blood from the ..read more

We often get asked: what is a vegan tattoo? and aren't tattoos vegan by default? Nah, not really... It's mostly about the inks used by your tattooist, but other factors can come into play; like the cleaning products and soap your tattoo studio uses. There is no need to be concerned when you visit us as all the products we use are cruelty free. No products are tested on animals and none of the products we use in the shop from barber/hairstylist to tattoos contain animal by-products. Yes, all are ethically vegan! It's not always easy to tell if a product is completely vegan because not ALL of th ..read more

Hand Poke Tattoos

Coming from someone with a DIY mindset, a punk history and gypsy in the fam and soul - let's just say the hand poke style of tattooing is something I'm fond of. This intriguing machine-free tattooing has all the feels, 5-stars and a big tick from me. Do I actually have old-school DIY punk style tattoos? Well, I remember in the mid 80s hanging out at the local Milk Bar in regional Australia and running a mile when a sketchy backyard tattooist approached me with a sewing needle and some pen-ink (India ink wouldn't have been easy to obtain outback in the sticks). I imagine I was more shit-scared ..read more

Second Skins - Tattoo Aftercare
ROXXI & SIOUX Blog
by Colette Tattoli

Getting a tattoo is quite a big deal, right?! Taking care of that fresh ink is also kind of a big deal. This is why we strongly recommended using second skin as your tattoo aftercare to prevent scarring and infections. How does a second skin work? The second skin we use is a hypoallergenic, transparent, waterproof adhesive bandage that works by creating a barrier over your freshly tattooed skin. This helps to keep your fresh tattoo clean and protected from bacteria, moisture, and other free-radicals floating in the air. Second skins aren't designed to treat infection so think of this extremel ..read more

THE MULLET

I was born in a rural lead-smelting town, so the mullet is a little triggering to me, but times have changed. I’ve had therapy and the mullet has moved forward, evolved even. There’s no doubt the mullet has made a true comeback, and I’m all for it. When we finally got to open Roxxi’s after what felt like a million lockdowns, it wasn’t hard to notice that the mullet meant business! Let’s face it, we’re in Fitzroy so we’re going to be all over the mullet! Back in the day it was about getting the most out of what was happening at the back of the head while keeping it short at the front. The moder ..read more

by Colette Tattoli

We’re often asked about the origins and intricacies of fine-line tattooing. Fine lines are associated with thin, delicate designs where small needles are used. The fine-line work is the design, rather than shading and bold lines, and the artwork is generally black and grey, although colours can be incorporated. WHAT IS A FINE-LINE TATTOO?  A fine-line tattoo is softer, thinner and lighter than traditional and old-school tattoo styles, and is often marked by a delicate elegance. Also known as micro tattoos, think botanicals, minimalist designs, handwriting, geometrical shapes and det ..read more

The art of the cut-throat shave is fast disappearing in the face of modern tech and our time- poor lives. But when it comes to shaving, nothing compares to the timeless, traditional methods used by the Roxxi & Sioux barbers. While electric and disposable razors might save you time, we’re not going to lie, dragging a dull blade across your face is just that – dull AF. It's also a million miles away from the true ritual of men’s grooming. We’re aware that a close shave at home takes time though, which is why you need experts to nail the job first time, every time! WHAT IS A TRADITIONAL WET ..read more
