DEVILS LAKE — The first year of the Laurence Arango era is nearly over.
The Lake Region State College baseball team wrapped up its regular season conference schedule on Sunday, falling in both games of a doubleheader against Dawson Community College (10-30, 7-17). After winning 19-0 in the first game on Saturday, the Royals ended up going 1-3 on the weekend. They finished conference play with a 4-20 record (9-29 overall), putting them in last place in the Mon-Dak Athletic Conference.

It’s hard to believe, but the Lake Region State College sports season is already coming to an end.
The Royals played their final weekday games of the regular season this past week. Both diamond sports traveled to Williston State College on Wednesday; then, the softball team returned home against the University of Jamestown JV on Thursday. The softball squad went 2-2 over the two doubleheaders, while the baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader against WSC.

The Devils Lake baseball team has been riding a winning streak, one that’s opened opponents’ eyes as to what the Firebirds are capable of. They beat the team that ended their season last year. They beat the three-time defending champions.
Yet Fausten Olson, despite being the No. 2 hitter in the lineup, hadn’t gotten it going yet. He entered Friday hitting only .117 with a .231 OBP and .176 slugging percentage.

DEVILS LAKE — The warmest day in the Lake Region this year brought 22 mph winds along with it.
In that respect, it was a strange day at Devils Lake High School, with the temperature rising above 70 degrees yet with a roaring wind that could knock a backpack off the bleachers. Plus, the Firebirds’ softball team didn’t have its usual head coach; Courtney Loegering had to sit out due to a recent surgery. So assistant coach Jenna Windjue stepped in.

The DLJ’s own, Andrew Benjamin, got the bronze medal at the Submission Challenge grappling tournament Saturday. The grappling tournament took place at the Courts Plus Community Center in Fargo where hundreds of grapplers tested themselves against opponents from all over the country.
Andrew competed in the blue belt division in the 145 lbs division in both no-gi and gi. He went 2-1 in no-gi, winning both his matches by toe-hold submission and winning the bronze medal. While he did not fare as well in gi, going 0-2, he was very happy to compete, something he hadn’t done in a long time.

Bob, (or Sonny as Grandma Nellie liked to call him), 93, was called to heaven on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, with his beloved Peggy holding his hand.
Visitation will be held Friday, April 26, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Cando, ND. Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by Father Daniel Musgrave, will be held Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Sacred Heart at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be at the Starkweather Cemetery at a later date with full military honors.
