I’ve long been a fan of the Simon Sinek TED Talk Start with Why, and the principle has been central to my work for many years. If you’ve never seen this TED Talk, or read the book, watch this summary (less than 5 minutes). Never miss a talk! Forget hashtags - a social media lightbulb moment

"Forget hashtags." I'm talking to a client who's struggling with consistently showing up in their marketing. And I'm telling them to not bother with hashtags. WOAH. A marketing person saying don't use social media properly? Exactly my friend. Because I'd rather you did marketing imperfectly than not at all. When hashtags stop you from doing marketing So many small business owners I've spoken to don't show up because they don't understand a feature of social media like hashtags or reels. Is it the same for you? Or maybe you worry about what aunty Pat or your old boss will think of your content ..read more

3 reasons we fail at marketing goals
Goodness Marketing Blog

As we limp towards the end of the first month of the year, I have a question for you. How sure are you that you’ll stick to your new year’s resolutions for all of 2024? Apparently only 6% of people manage to! What about your business goal(s)? Do you think you’ll achieve it? It seems most small biz owners are in one of 3 camps. ❌ don’t firm up goals (“it’s in my head”) ? shoot beyond the moon, accepting early on they won’t get there ? go low out of fear of failure But what if we really, really want to achieve that goal? Or NEED to? Because for most of us, this business isn’t just a hobby. Why b ..read more

The answer is almost always "less"
Goodness Marketing Blog

Would you agree that we are conditioned to want MORE? More money, more things, more activities? Do you constantly feel you should be doing more in your business? More marketing to get more sales to make more money? What if I challenged you to consider that instead of more, the answer to your saved challenges is almost always LESS? Hear me out. I've been saying "no more" in a very intentional way so far this month. Decluttering the house of outgrown, duplicate and unnecessary possessions. Sorting out my laptop files and camera roll (SO many screenshots). Saying no to things that overfill my dia ..read more

As a marketing coach I get a fascinating insight into many varied small businesses. I’m always inspired by the resilience, passion, and the courage to embrace change that each of these entrepreneurs shows. One such inspiring entrepreneur is Sandra Palmer. I can’t remember when I first met Sandra, but I remember that when I came across her on Instagram I immediately fell in love with her ethos of sustainability and her gorgeous art.   Meet entrepreneur Sandra Palmer.   I also loved that her art-led swimwear brand, More Than Swim, prided itself on making sustainable swimwear for every ..read more

Small businesses with big hearts. That’s how I describe my ideal clients. They’re people who really give a sh*t. About their work, the people they serve, the wider world and about their impact. I couldn’t be prouder to say that this year I’ve worked with well over 200 businesses. Some of them came to workshops and events I ran. Others I got to know really well through 1:1 marketing coaching, strategy and power hours. And of course a totally joyful lot are in the Do Crew! Each and every one of them made me so proud, and also inspired me. I’m truly grateful. So in celebration of Small Business S ..read more

6 best business investments (and 3 personal expenses that boost my biz)

This month Goodness Marketing celebrates 6 years of helping small businesses with big hearts do marketing that feels good, does good, and gets good results. As I look back over the ups and downs, the lessons learned and the experience gained, I feel very, very grateful. One of the big lessons I’ve learned is how to invest in my business. This was in my kitchen on the first official day of working for myself. Back in 2017 I was bootstrapping every single thing. I left my job without a financial cushion, so the focus was on bringing money in asap and avoiding unnecessary costs. I could afford t ..read more

The slippery slope of marketing ruts

If you find yourself in a rut with your marketing, feeling demotivated and disillusioned with it all, you could be on a very slippery slope. A slippery slope that doesn't serve you or your business, and that gets harder to escape from the longer you stay on it. And I want to help you get off this slippery slope asap. Why? Because getting stuck in a marketing rut inevitably leads to less showing up, less visibility, fewer sales and fewer opportunities. But it doesn’t have to get this far because you can avoid this path and get back on track. Here's how you can start finding your way out of a m ..read more

Shitty marketing advice

Shitty marketing advice is everywhere, and I’m sick of it. Week after week I speak to overwhelmed and stressed small business owners who tell me they don’t like marketing, or marketing isn’t working for them, or marketing fills up their days and doesn’t get them results. A lot of this can be traced back to bad advice given to them by well-meaning marketing experts, business coaches and the like. This morning I experienced this first-hand. I listened to a recording of a workshop for small business owners on the topic of social media. There was a lot of content, including strategic elements whic ..read more

What a singing estate agent can teach you about marketing

A Facebook group for people working in marketing isn’t where I’d usually expect to see an ad for a house. But this Rightmove listing had something very unusual… and a few marketing lessons to boot. In-between pictures of a £700k 5-bed detached house there’s a video tour unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s divided opinions. On the FB group where I first saw the video, most people cringed and criticised. I for one bloody loved it, and I want to tell you why I did, what you can learn from The Never-Ending Property marketing, and how you can apply these lessons to your marketing. Marketing that ..read more
