Happy Birthday Highland Hustle … An Instructors Journey
Highland Hustle
by Gillian Urquhart

Ten years ago, Gillian Urquhart had a light bulb moment and came up with the concept of Highland Hustle, one of my best friends spotted her launch on Facebook sent me the link – “you could do this” …. This week I celebrate 8 years on my Highland Hustle journey – my first class of Hustlers officially launched on Wednesday 20th January 2016. Eight years ago, my classes were full of leaps, bouncing and a whole lot of flexible.  I’m older now (not quite bus pass but it’s not far away as my family keeps reminding me) but so are my fellow Hustlers, and we take it at a more gentle pace. How Highland Hustle started …
Highland Hustle

Roll the clock back to exactly 6 years ago last night. I  was sobbing into a glass of red wine ... the kids had gone off early to bed for the start of a new school term and I was getting ready to go back to work the next day.  Highland Hustle did not yet exist!  My husband gave me a cuddle, feeling helpless and he said to me that I had to do something about it. Enough was enough. I had been unhappy in my job for a long time.  Essentially, I still loved PE teaching but I’d been in the same job for far too long and I felt like I’d stopped making a difference. I felt an ..read more

Highland Hustle Conference
Highland Hustle
by Gillian Urquhart

It was a cold, crisp and sunny morning when I met with my class outside and headed towards the welcome area of the 2019 Highland Hustle Conference. Even before reaching the reception area we could hear music, laughter and feel the atmosphere.  Ten of us from Fife, at my Highland Hustle with Kate class, were heading to the beautiful Murrayshall Hotel ready for a weekend of Highland Hustle fun and I was so looking forward to the weekend ahead ... The conference doors opened and we were welcomed with a goodie bag.  Straight away we were all in them straight away to see our bag of good ..read more

Did you know that you can do Highland Dance lessons in Australia? It is a pleasure to introduce Tessa Bond as the Hustle Hero Australian representative. Tessa joined Highland Dance lessons to learn the Highland Fling at age seven in Australia and has been leading fantastic Highland Hustle classes since 2016. Watch the video to see Tessa having a wee dance around Ramsay Street! With little knowledge of the art form and no family history of Highland Dancing, Tessa was instantly in love with it and her passion for dance has only grown since. Tessa has competed in championships and competitio ..read more

Learn Sword Dance
Highland Hustle

Can I learn the Sword Dance? Where can I learn Highland Dancing as an adult? Both questions Highland Hustle has been asked and so we think we have a solution. As many of you know, Highland Hustle takes inspiration from Highland movements in a way that the class is accessible for everyone.  But, a normal Hustle class does not involve a full Highland Fling for example. Some non dancers who come into our classes want to know a bit more about traditional Highland so this solution is perfect for them too. The Community Members site currently has a video for complete beginners to learn the ..read more

Highland Hustle is a really good fun class!  A dance workout class that is all about helping you to feel great as you dance your socks off, set to amazing music and has something for everyone whether a complete beginner or top class champion dancer!  It always aims to be a welcoming, non intimidating, friendly class too. Have you ever been so involved in something you assume everyone else thinks or knows the same? In the past wee while I’ve been asked what Highland Hustle is and been told that they had never heard of it before. Wait …. what?! I kind of (wrongly I think) assumed ..read more

Ways to make yourself happy, using your passion for a purpose
Highland Hustle
by Gillian Urquhart

This probably isn’t the most inspirational way to start a blog but until last week I was feeling a bit rubbishy, a bit meh!   Honestly, I feel like I’d lost my purpose a bit, floating really.   We are to supposedly getting back to normal after the last two years … our ‘new normal’ and I know I should be grateful.   This is not a sob story -  lets put this in perspective, there is so much more going on in the world. Anyone else been feeling the same?! During the pandemic I jumped to it with free classes and resources and whilst I hope it helped others, if I’m being ho ..read more

Isolation as a child, again during COVID and why dance helps
Highland Hustle

NOTE! This was written end of May 2020 but I decided against publishing it. But now, as we continue with the constraints of COVID impacting our new normal in Sept 2020 I feel the message is even more relevant …. It was the 1980’s and I was ten years old, in hospital and in isolation.  Medical staff were wearing gloves, face masks, full disposable gown and shoe coverings, as were my parents, who were my only permitted visitors for an hour per day.  My daughter is also currently ten years old at the time of writing during these times of COVID 19 (currently May 2020) and ..read more
