People come to take Permaculture Courses for a number of reasons: some want to adopt a new way of thinking and bring more creativity into the work they are already doing, others don’t find meaning in their current occupation and are looking for alternatives; some are looking to buy land hoping to run a homestead, while still others have a small garden at home and would like to get more in touch with the soil and produce a few things for themselves. Over the years many people have taken Permaculture Courses with Social Landscapes and again and again I am inspired and humbled to see what they ge ..read more

Learning from the Woods… A Permaculture weekend at Hazel Hill Wood in Photos

On our yearly London-based Permaculture Design Course we’ve made it a tradition to spend one weekend away from the city. The last couple of years we went down to Hazel Hill Wood near Salisbury, a charity set in a 70-acre magical woodland promoting wellbeing and resilience through building a connection with nature. We had photographer Amy Behrens Clark join us to document some of our journey and asked a few of the participants about their experience learning about Permaculture. Observing Flow

As part of our online Permaculture Design Course, we encourage participants to spend time in nature to observe. Here are some reflections from Naomi, course participant in 2022/23 on observing flow, also published on her own blog livinglearninggettingolder.com. According to an ancient Zen koan, ‘your face before your parents were born’ is your original face. With this tradition in mind, Ruth Ozeki challenged herself to spend three hours gazing at her own reflection in a mirror, “recording her thoughts, and noticing every possible detail. Those solitary hours open up a lifetime's worth of medit ..read more

Another Permaculture Design Course comes to an end. This was my first in-person course in a few years. I’ve really loved working with this group of talented and inspiring participants. I feel humbled by the course and encouraged for what’s next. As, on these courses, we’re all learning from each other, we like participants to award the certificates to each other. Here are photos of some of the proud new certificate holders. A big thank you to everyone for the wholehearted engagement, the inspiring presentations and to Roupell Park Estate management and residents for welcoming us and hosting us ..read more

I am looking for one or two volunteers to support me on the upcoming London Permaculture Design Course and the Online Permaculture Design Course, both starting in November 2022. This is a great opportunity, particularly if you hold a Permaculture Design Certificate already and are interested in exploring the teaching role, or simply want to deepen your knowledge of permaculture by going over the materials again while being in a different role. Priority is given to those who have taken a Permaculture Design Course with Social Landscapes and those who have some previous knowledge or experience o ..read more

Permaculture Pathways: From Stand Up Comedy to Permaculture and Beyond

I’m in my early 30s and have spent much of the last decade ‘being a comedian’ which has mostly meant doing stand up, until the last few years during which I’ve been lucky enough to spend most of my time writing and acting in sitcoms for the BBC. I feel lucky and I enjoy it, but nevertheless I increasingly felt like something was missing from my life and more specifically I felt disconnected from nature and like I didn’t spend enough time outdoors, which I suppose is what ‘led me to permaculture’. I think I first heard the term during a guided tour of Cloughjordan Eco Village in Tipperary, Irel ..read more

Can you imagine the end...

Can you Imagine the end of our civilisation, the end of our world, the end of you? What is the difference between the death of humanity, the death of your children’s future, and the death of you? Aren't you dying with every species that goes extinct every river polluted, every forest that's cut down? What would it feel like to sit still for a moment - just a moment away from your projects, your ideas, your hopes and petty fears - and imagine the end of your world? What would it feel like to stop looking for excuses and truly listen to that voice that's been trying to get your attention, tr ..read more
